  1. “Walking In My Shoes”- Depeche Mode • “Morality would frown uponDecency look down uponThe scapegoat fate's made of meBut I promise now, my judge and jurorsMy intentions couldn't have been purerMy case is easy to seeI'm not looking for a clearer consciencePeace of mind after what I've been throughAnd before we talk of any repentanceTry walking in my shoes” This song reminds me of Tom Robinson’s trial in To Kill a Mockingbird for several reasons. The first three lines of this part of the song talk about the indecency and immorality of making scapegoats out of people. Tom was certainly scapegoated for the suffering of Mayella Ewell at the hands of her father. The next line makes an even closer connection to TKM, where it says, “But I promise now my judge and jurors.” It would not be difficult to hear these words coming from Tom’s mouth during the trial. The final line echoes a theme that recurs throughout TKM. The idea of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, or seeing life from someone else’s perspective. This is what Atticus tried to get people to do all throughout the book.
