  1. Hi kids! Use this review show to help you study for the fossils and rock layers test we have this Friday. As you scroll through the show read the question and see if you can answer it on your own, before clicking to the next answer. Once you think you know the answer then click forward to see if you’re right. Once you get to the bottom the show you’ll see the diagram we learned about index fossils from. If you’re watching this on Powerpoint click to see the question appear on that slide, determine your answer and then click again to see the correct answer. If you’re not watching this with Powerpoint (you clicked the other version) the question and the answer come up at the same time.   3. The steps to create most fossils in sedimentary rock: 1) Animal dies and sinks to the bottom of shallow water, usually a lake or pond. 2) Sediment covers the organism. What is the missing 3rd step? 4) Weather (breaking down) & erosion (carrying away) eventually expose fossil at surface.

  4. 3) Through steps for sedimentary rock (EDCC) sediment becomes rock preserving parts of the organism.

  6. What is a hollow area in sediment in the shape of the organism (usually made by shell or bones)?

  25. What does absolute age mean?

  26. The number of years since the organism existed. For example: the absolute age of a fossil could be 250 million years old.

  27. According to the Law of Superposition the rock layer on the ________________ would be (Top or Bottom) the youngest layer at a location. EXPLAIN your answer.

  28. The rock layer on the TOP of a set of rock layers in a location would be the youngest. This is because each sedimentary rock layer forms on top of the rock layer most recently formed. So the age of the rock decreases as you go further up rock layers and it increases as you go further down rock layers.

  29. What does relative age mean?

  30. The age of something (rock layer) compared to something else (another rock layer above or below it)

  31. A.Layer C is older than layer B, because it was formed before layer B. Or you could say that layer B is younger than layer C because B was formed after layer C. Q.Compare the relative ages of layers C and B in North America.

  32. Q. What are the 2 index fossils? A. The triangle and the plus sign.

  33. A. 2 reasons: One- it’s in more than 2 layers in North America so it didn’t last a short period of time. Two- it’s found in top layers, meaning it could still be alive on the surface of the top layer. Q. Why is the lightening bolt not an index fossil?

  34. A. Because it is only found in Europe, it is not widely distributed. Q. Why can’t the pink heart be an index fossil?
