  2. Why Do It? • Determining Importance (Look-See-Think): Our purpose for reading guides what we consider to be important. Readers cannot remember every fact, so they must identify the most important ideas. • Summarizing (In a Nutshell): Summaries are pieces of information that a reader adds to develop the main idea. Through summarizing, readers learn to distinguish essential from non-essential information, to organize the information, and to briefly restate the essential information.

  3. Five Steps to Summarize Effectively • 1) Identify the important ideas. • 2) Condense supporting details. • 3) Delete less important information and redundant material. • 4) Substitute precise language for lists and descriptions. • 5) Compose a topic sentence.

  4. When British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the relatively unknown Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen in 1922, he could hardly have imagined how his find would affect the world. For Carter, it was the highpoint of a brilliant careeras an Egyptologist, and he would spend the next 10 years of his life supervising the removal of the tomb’s contents. For the world, Carter’s discovery ignited the imagination and left such a dramatic impression that songs, books, and movies are still being made about “King Tut.” Who was Tutankhamen and what choices led Howard Carterto the deserts of Egypt in search of King Tutankhamen?
