  1. LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review HPSC Hardpoints Study and Rework

  2. Highlights (Q1/2007) • Upper arm lightweighted with Carbon Fiber (weighs ≈ 1/3 the wt. of original) • ‘Differential’ pistons installed and function properly w/o the need for springs • Anti-Backlash gear installed • Modify/removal of primary counterweight arms, removal of more weight • Modified Lower Flexure LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  4. LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  5. LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  6. LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  7. Open Issues • Technical • Consistency in testing • Glass safety qualified • Backlash in 50:1 gearbox for stepper motor • Schedule • None • Financial • Unbudgeted • Resource • People • Time very limited LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  8. Progress (Q1/2007) • Have eddy current sensors to replace LVDT’s for testing • Cost for current modifications ≈ $4,000 LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review

  9. Planning (Q2/2007) • Fabricate another ‘Differential’ Piston set with the appropriate gland widths • Continue stiffness testing, get better stiffness values from measurements • Test with eddy current sensors, instead of LVDT’s • Locate stiffness loss(es), and attempt to increase stiffness • Modify engine stand for gravitational loading/orientation stiffness testing LBT Q1 2007 Engineering Review
