  2. Lord of the Flies – Chapter 11Castle Rock We are learning to: Success Criteria Identify the use of symbolism. I can: discuss the use of symbolism conveyed by the death of Piggy. • Jotter? • Planner on the desk? • Pen or pencil? Achieving this S.C. means you are on target!

  3. Chapter Summary • Ralph is unable to light the fire. • He and Piggy, with Sam and Eric, resolve to see Jack. • A scuffle breaks out between the two groups. • Piggy is killed by a falling rock.

  4. Piggy’s Death – Lord of the Flies movie • As we watch the scene in which Piggy dies, create a visualiser with information on how Piggy behaves in this scene. 12-15 mins How does Piggy behave in “Castle Rock?”

  5. Piggy’s death In Chapter Eleven we see a much braver Piggy than we saw at the beginning of the novel. Without his glasses he is very vulnerable yet he insists on going to Castle Rock with Ralph. • Why do you think he does this? Which is better – to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? At Castle Rock Piggy speaks out for civilized behaviour, just before he is killed by Roger.

  6. Piggy’s death • Group Discussion Questions • How did you feel when you read about Piggy’s death? • How do you think Golding wanted you to feel? • Think back to Chapter Four. Was Piggy’s death foreshadowed? 7 minutes

  7. Symbolism? • When Piggy is killed, the conch, which he is holding, is also destroyed. • What is the significance of Piggy’s death and the shattering of the conch?

  8. Significance • Roger kills Piggy with a boulder and in Chapter Four we saw a suggestion of his sadistic nature when he threw stones at a littlun. • Piggy’s death and the shattering of the conch signify the end of everything Piggy and the shell represented on the island – rational thought, order, rules, democracy.
