1. Pulses Production in Pakistan: Current Situation

2. Pakistan Agriculture: Basic Facts Total cropped area : 22.51 m ha Pulses : 1.492 m ha (7%) Cereals : 12.603 m ha (56%) Cash crops : 4.343 m ha (19%) Edible oilseeds : 0.694 m ha (3%) Pulses-cereals ratio : 1:8.5 Net availability : 0.983 m tons Per capita availability: 6.44 kg/annum

3. Area and production of major pulse crops (% of pulses cropped area)

4. Area, production and yield Av. of 5 years (2001-02 to 2004-05)

5. Production constraints Production of pulses is affected by many biotic and abiotic stresses which hamper the realization of actual yield potential Chickpea Drought Diseases (A. blight, wilt) Weeds Lentil Lentil Diseases (Blight, rust, root rot-wilt complex) Weeds Cold, Drought (High lands) Drought (Low lands) Mungbean and Mash Diseases (MUMV, CLS, BLS, charcoal rot) Insect pest (Hairy caterpillar, white fly, thrips, tobacco caterpillar) Weeds

6. Reasons for crisis Adverse weather Bird flue scenario Population pressure Decline in cultivated area (lentil, mash) Regular exports of lentil and mash beside their shortage Import/export dilemma Lack of coordination between M/O Agriculture and Commerce Undue export of chickpea and mung

7. Imports and exports of pulses (Rs. Million)

8. Import and export of chickpea

9. Current situation Sufficiency in two major pulse crops i.e. chickpea and mungbean primarily due to improved varieties. Lag behind in lentil and mash production mainly due to displacement of these crops from traditional growing areas with drastic reduction in cultivated area.

10. Actions suggested to government Establishment of improved seed and its dissemination systems Encouragement of private sector in seed production business Implementation of price intervention for major pulse crop and procurement of produce by the Government Timely availability of quality inputs especially pesticides
