  2. . Frustrated to Fabulous What People Are Saying About Amy Applebaum top of header, subhead and bcopy I had a seed of a business idea. For women there’s Amy Applebaum. - Nia Peeples , Actress and CEO of Elements of LIfe for quote “Amy Applebaum is the success coach for a new generation. Frustrated to Fabulous Welcome top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop When I met Janice, a busy female entrepreneur trying to balance it all, she was ready to leave her husband. Her teenage daughter was out of control. Her finances were in shambles, her career was stuck, and she was incredibly angry at her parents, her brother, her husband, her daughter, and everyone else who she felt had let her down over the years. Basically, her life felt like a nightmare. She felt out of control, purposeless and hopeless. And it looked like countless women’s lives whose marriages and families are suffering, and whose careers aren’t progressing as they’d have hoped. You might know one of these women. for body copy if theres a header up top “ of problems for quote for quote It’s not the type or number we face that matters. She said she was in a hurry and told me to “speed it up.” Being concerned about her time issue, I explained that we make our oatmeal from scratch and that it would take approximately 20 minutes to cook. She said, “O.k.” Nine minutes later she started snapping her fingers and shouting across the restaurant, “Where’s my oatmeal?!” achiever... “ what happened? I walked over to her and explained, again, that the oatmeal is made from scratch when ordered, and takes approximately 20 minutes. She shouted, “Bring me my oatmeal now!” I proceeded over to the cook’s station and requested the oatmeal. They told me it wasn’t fully cooked. I said, “That is how she wants it.” I got fired that day. Although I wasn’t sad to say goodbye to a place I was allowing to suck the life out of me, it was still my life, and now, it was gone. I had always been an “achiever” and a “go getter.” What had happened? I was humiliated. My life, as I knew it, was over. What was I going to do? I felt so depressed. I wanted to crawl 6

I threw things, moped around, called myself a “loser.” And cried some more. top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop for body copy if theres a header up top Then I had a breakthrough. After a month of agony, it hit me - like a piano falling off the roof of a building. There was so much more to this scenario than “getting fired.” I had been unhappy long before getting fired. I didn’t have to work at that restaurant if it wasn’t making me happy. But, I chose to. I had been obsessing about my problems for months, feeling sorry for myself, blaming others and getting nowhere. I could have spent that time deciding what to do about it, moving past my problems and creating the life I wanted. I have a choice about how I think, how I act, and what I choose to do with my life. I hated working at that restaurant. Getting fired meant freedom. It was an opportunity for me to create the amazing life I had been putting off. for myself to being excited In a moment, I went from feeling sorry for myself to being excited. I could be an entrepreneur!” 7

  8. . Frustrated to Fabulous That was it - I would start my own company, just like my dad. For one second, I had a twinge of, “I don’t know how” rush through me. Then in the very next moment thought to myself, “I don’t care, I’ll figure it out.” I didn’t know how, but I was determined to figure it out. 9. . Frustrated to Fabulous About Moi top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop Hi! I’m Amy! I’m a business coach, CEO of multiple companies, wife, mom of a toddler, and a 15-year entrepreneur. (Ok maybe 17.) I have failed multiple times (still do), and fear is something I manage consistently. In fact, I was so afraid to pursue my dream of being an entrepreneur that I waited until I got fired to actually go for it. for body copy if theres a header up top for quote for quote And I was not an overnight success. My first biz was a vending company and after six months, my only “accomplishment” was having one of my vending machines fall on a little boy. Fortunately, he was OK, but my business wasn’t. So… Struggle. Fear. Doubts. I get it! Over the past decade, I’ve had the incredible honor of working with thousands of women, helping them create success, step by step. The way my mentors helped me. By providing direction & strategies to help them create compelling visions and brands, build confidence, and increase sales. Thankfully, I was smart enough to swallow my pride and ask for some much needed help. And that’s when the world of success opened up to me. Phew! It is possible. Along the way, my perseverance got me featured on ABC, CNN, TLC, Dr. Drew’s LifeChangers, Martha Stewart Radio and others. I say this NOT to be obnoxious, but to show you what happens when you focus, surround yourself around the right mentors, and follow through. I would love to help you on your success journey. Please visit me at www.AmyApplebaum.com and let’s get started! With the help of my mentors, I created a kick-a** vision that moved me, an engaging brand that my market loved, worked on my confidence and mindset, and then… stepped out of my comfort zone and started sharing my offerings. Over & over & over! The results? SALES! LOTS OF THEM!!! In one year, I established over 300 accounts and a thriving business. Five years later, I sold my company for a NICE profit and made it my commitment to help women achieve personal & financial success through their businesses. To Your Success! 9

Frustrated to Fabulous top of header, subhead and bcopy Rules of the Game for body copy if theres a subehead uptop for body copy if theres a header up top You can use this book like a workbook, over and over to overcome any business problem you have. To get the most out of this program, there are some rules that you’ll want to follow. If your goal, for example, was to become physically fit, you wouldn’t get anywhere if you ate a pint of ice cream every day and refused to exercise. Likewise, mental and emotional fitness takes commitment. If you want “living an incredible life” to be the standard instead of the exception, you’ll need to shift your thinking, and subsequently shift your actions. “ your life, you’re for quote for quote To get what you want in going to have “ commit to Throughout this process, my job is to support you in achieving the business and life that you want to have. So, in order to do that, you’ll want to follow some rules: these rules 1 Read this book in order. The arrangement of the steps is critical to your success. Some like to skip ahead to the last chapter, but, if you “cheat” and skip forward, you might not end up where you want to be. You might not properly identify the obstacles that keep blocking you from achieving your goals. 2 Participate. You don’t just want to be a reader of this book. If you want results, really get involved. Creating a success is all about taking action. So, you’ll want to try on the perspectives presented and finish the 10

You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. for body copy if theres a subehead uptop for body copy if theres a header up top “ you’re going for quote for quote In order to be This book might not be long, but some of the exercises might take 30 minutes, 45 minutes, even an hour. To help keep you on track, schedule time in your calendar to read the book and participate in the exercises. I suggest at least an hour per day, but if you only have 15 minutes, that will work. If you take this process seriously, you will see incredible results, quickly. successful, “ to have to participate 3 Focus on one problem at a time. When it comes to challenges in life, we usually suffer from more than one. For example, maybe you’re not making enough money. Maybe you don’t know how to brand yourself. Maybe you don’t know how to increase sales. Maybe you don’t know how to manage your personal life and business. Maybe you are suffering from many of these at the same time. True, you might have multiple problems you’re dealing with, but for now, just address one priority problem – the one you feel that if solved, would make the biggest difference in your life and business – and may even solve the other problems. Once you have resolved that problem, you can revisit the process and 11

  16. . Frustrated to Fabulous Step One: Uncover Your Real Problem top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop for body copy if theres a header up top Everybody Has Problems “ “ Problems are part of life and certainly part of business. Sometimes you have lots of problems going on at once; sometimes you only have a few you’re dealing with; sometimes you have none. But, one thing is certain, we all deal with problems in our life – at one point or another. for quote for quote All of us have one thing in common: Problems It doesn’t matter if you sell stocks and bonds on Wall Street, or hot dogs on the street corner, all of us have one thing in common: problems. Just ask Britney Spears, Bill Clinton, or Martha Stewart. Their fame, talent, money and power did not make them exempt from suffering through problems. So, you are not alone, nor do you hold the ticket for the most serious problem, the largest number of problems, the most embarrassing problem or the only problem that can’t be solved. We never know what problems we will face or when we will face them but we do know we will face them! So, what’s the problem? The biggest problem with problems is not the problem itself, it’s not having the strategy to move past them. You will learn that process here. You obviously want to have an amazing life, or you wouldn’t be 16

  17. . Frustrated to Fabulous here. And, you wouldn’t have started a business. So, what’s the problem? Why did you pick up this book? What do you wish was working in your business that isn’t or isn’t to the degree you’d like it to? top of header, subhead and bcopy “ unless you In my reality, there is no problem unless you think there is. So, let’s first, make sure not try to fix things that you like; or focus on things that you don’t see as problems. What you want to focus on are problems that are preventing you from moving forward in your business (or life). We also want to pay attention to “problems” that you don’t know you have yet. I call these “hidden” problems. We will identify many of those throughout this process. for quote There is no problem think there is Problems exist because there is something that we view as “not right” in our life and business. So look at that area of your life that is creating stress or a lack of freedom and happiness for you. That is the area that we want to focus on throughout this book. This internal conflict causes you to suffer in varying degrees. The suffering increases the longer you have the internal conflict. All problems are created by an internal conflict of some kind. For example: YOU WANT to get along with your husband AND YOU DON’T YOU WANT to make more money YOU WANT to lose 20 pounds YOU WANT a better sex life YOU WANT to be happy YOU WANT your business to take off YOU WANT more respect from someone AND YOU’RE NOT GETTING IT AND YOU DON’T AND YOU CAN’T AND YOU DON’T HAVE IT AND YOU’RE NOT AND IT HASN’T 17

  18. . Frustrated to Fabulous Not resolving problems causes you to experience certain aspects of your life as painful, upsetting and unfulfilling. top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop This is where we, out of frustration with our ongoing problems, take out our pain on others, are disrespectful to those we love, yell at people driving, become abusive and make huge events out of trivial happenings. Problems that go unsolved cause lots of damage not only to the individual who is suffering, but also to others. for body copy if theres a header up top “ on your ability for quote for quote Your business is dependent Remember, when we don’t get what we want over time, we become agitated, dissatisfied, unhappy, mean, angry, bitter, numb, uncaring, stressed and/or depressed. In order to not feel our problem, we often turn to drugs, alcohol, gambling, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, suicide, retreating from the community, and overeating, to name a few. In these cases, the actual problem, or real problem creates secondary problems, or symptoms. “ to move past problems Why am I telling you all of this? Because your business is dependent on your ability to first, address that there is a problem and then, move past it. And if you don’t you and your business will suffer. Maybe this seems dramatic but rest assured, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS when you don’t recognize the importance of dealing with issues and challenges head on. So, let’s investigate further. 18

  19. . Frustrated to Fabulous The Real Problem vs. The Symptom top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop The Real Problem, or underlying problem, is what actually CAUSES the disruption in your business. The symptom is what TELLS US WE HAVE A PROBLEM. for body copy if theres a header up top “ symptoms... What we do in our society, typically, is treat symptoms: drugs for depression, alcohol to chase our troubles away, blaming to avoid taking responsibility. Instead, we need to start dealing with the real problems that cause the symptoms. So, when you have a problem, especially with your business, it’s important to keep asking the next question in an effort to determine what the real, underlying and hidden problems are. for quote for quote In our society we treat instead we need to deal For example (and I’m going to use an extreme example because it really hits the point): A girl who has anorexia clearly has a problem. Yes, anorexia is a problem, but it is a secondary problem. Something causes her to not eat. Anorexia is a secondary problem that is sure to find it’s way back into her life even after treatment, if she doesn’t solve the real underlying problem. “ with the root problems In your business, let’s say you don’t have enough sales so you are not making enough money. That is the symptom. What we must do is determine why you don’t have enough sales. Is it because you have no sales plan and spend no time focused on selling? And if that is the case, why? Are you afraid of networking or being rejected? Or, do you not have sales because you have targeted the wrong market, have ineffective advertising, or your personality puts people off? You can see that if you don’t uncover the underlying problem you will never get to the bottom of why you are not selling. 19

  20. . Frustrated to Fabulous A Problem vs. A Challenge top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop For the purposes of our work here, let’s look at problems as those things that are not working with our life or business. Things that prevent us from moving forward and achieving success. for body copy if theres a header up top for quote for quote The real In reality, the danger is not the problem itself – there are always problems and there will always be problems. They are a part of life. The real danger is not moving past the problem and allowing the problem to stop you, sabotage your growth, and kill your dream. danger is NOT moving past problems, and But, if you can turn a problem into a mere challenge – then you are on your way! allowing them “ to sabotage So what is a “challenge?” Let’s look at a challenge as something that you want to overcome, an adventure, a goal. And, as such, they will require perserverence, flexibility and courage to overcome. If one solution doesn’t work, you’ll just try another. Challenges also require humor and lightheartedness. A challenge is something to get motivated by, that can provide feelings of accomplishment and self confidence along the way. our success These are two very different ways of viewing something that is stopping you. One paralyzes and the other provides freedom. Note how just your view or your perception of something can make all the difference in the world. 20

  21. . Frustrated to Fabulous How We Deal With Problems top of header, subhead and bcopy It is not the types or number of problems we have that makes us unique, but rather how we deal with these problems. “ “ ? Some of us don’t deal with problems at all, stuffing them down, and pretending they don’t exist. for quote How we deal ? Some of us don’t realize we have problems until it’s too late. with problems is what makes us ? Some of us obsess internally about our problems, going over them in our minds, allowing them to fester and make us sick, frustrated etc. unique ? Some of us blame others for our problems. ? Some of us consistently talk about our problems with others, analyzing them for weeks, months and, in many cases, years. ? Some of us want to break through our problems, but don’t know how; often choosing ineffective solutions. ? Some of us look for a solution, but give up when the first one doesn’t work. As a result of these ways, we can end up stuck in our problems for indefinite periods of time. 21

  22. . Frustrated to Fabulous Problem Focused vs. Solution Focused top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop Most people don’t overcome their problems because the approach they are using, keeps them focused on the problem instead of the solution. for body copy if theres a header up top “ For example, there is often too much focus on the analysis of the problem. Analysis has it’s place and certainly provides you with more awareness of why your problem exists and where it came from, but it doesn’t leave you with a plan to move past it. There is not enough doing, not enough practicing of the solution which is critical to moving past any business problem. for quote for quote Begin attacking the problem by putting solutions “ I am not suggesting that analysis doesn’t have value. I am simply stating that if you FOCUS on the problem, you’ll get stuck inside the arena of the problem. The problem just keeps getting relived every time you talk about it. The reality is you get whatever you focus on. Focus on the problem and you will end up with the problem. into motion immediately Here’s an example that illustrates how powerful FOCUS is. I have a friend who had the opportunity to take a course to become certified to drive race cars. As part of the course, all students were required to learn defensive driving skills, and prove they could control a car in various situations. One of those situations was how to handle a car in the case of an extreme loss of steering and control, which could happen if you hit a large patch of ice while driving. The instructor asked the class if they had ever driven past an accident scene where a car had hit a tree or a pole. He said that if they had, they would 22

  23. . Frustrated to Fabulous have noticed (in most cases), that the car would hit the tree or pole dead center. There could be a half a block of open space on either side of the tree that was hit, but somehow the driver skidded right smack into the 12-inch diameter tree with the front of his/her car. top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop for body copy if theres a header up top “ Were they all just incredibly unlucky, and somehow missed all that open space on either side of the pole or tree, only to hit the narrow tree? Were they all terrible drivers who were so unable to control the car’s skid that they couldn’t avoid a small target like a tree? No. They were all thinking the same thing as the car skidded towards the tree: “DON’T HIT THE TREE!! DON’T HIT THE TREE!!” for quote for quote Whatever you “ are focused on you will hit They were looking at the tree. They were thinking about the tree. Every part of their mind and body was focused on the tree. And, according to the instructors, whatever you are focused on, you will hit. Whether you want to or not. So, even though they didn’t want to hit the tree, and they were thinking “Don’t hit the tree!” - all their eyes, mind and body heard was “Tree,” and they steered right into it. FOCUS is that powerful. In Frustrated to Fabulous, we will focus on the solution. You will identify your business problem and understand what it is, but instead of spending a lot of time talking about it, you will be putting solutions into motion immediately. 23

  24. . Frustrated to Fabulous Your Problems: Work on One at a Time top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop Now that we’ve defined what a “problem” is, the first step toward you solving yours is figuring out what your real problem is. for body copy if theres a header up top “ “ Again, my recommendation is that, you only work on one problem at a time, going all the way through the book with that one problem. It can be overwhelming to break through multiple problems at once while learning a new system. Later, when my process has become second nature, you can use it to conquer multiple problems at the same time. During this phase, you are gathering information to prepare to solve your problem. To complete this process, please take the next 30 minutes to answer the following questions: for quote Questionnaire Part I - Identify Your Problem What is your problem exactly? Often times you have multiple problems. For the purposes of this exercise, and the other exercises in this book, remember to focus on the one problem that feels like the “priority problem” affecting your life or business. To determine what the priority problem might be, think about what problem you have that if you solved, would make the biggest impact in your life and business—maybe even help solve some of the other problems you have. Remember, dig deep for the underlying problem. You know what it is, even if at first, you think you don’t. So, for example, if your problem is that you aren’t making enough money – ask yourself why? And if your answer is because you don’t have enough sales, then ask yourself, why? Is it because you spend no time on sales? Is it because nobody is interested in what you are selling? Dig Deep...keep asking “why” until you come up with what you think the problem is. And, by the way, if you are really brave and committed to your business (which we’ve identified that you are) then ask some people you trust who are good business men or women. Ask a customer. Ask your target market. Share with them what you are going through and drill down with them on why. Most people will tell you if you listen. It’s that underlying/real problem that we are looking for. 26

  36. . Frustrated to Fabulous Potential Traps top of header, subhead and bcopy for body copy if theres a subehead uptop There are various traps you could fall into while determining what you want. Here are a few to look out for: for body copy if theres a header up top ““ The People Pleasing Trap One common trap we fall into is that many of us make choices based on what other people want for us rather than what we want for ourselves. We tell ourselves things like, “What will my parents, my spouse or my mate think? How will my partner react? Will my friends approve?” As a society, we are so used to living our lives according to others’ needs, opinions, and wants, that we often forget how to think about what we want. for quote for quote Many of us make choices based on what other people want for us Think about it, how many of us have ended up in relationships that don’t make sense for us, or in careers we don’t like because someone else thought it might be a good idea for us? And then, we got disappointed. Disappointed in our partner, disappointed in our job, disappointed in people. And ultimately it’s because of our choices. We end up in situations that don’t satisfy us because, in many cases, we didn’t carefully consider what was important to us before making the choice. It is crucial as we move through this process that you begin trusting yourself and listening to your own voice; which you may have ignored for quite some time. It is only when you begin to listen to your own voice that you will begin to see your life shift in the direction you want. At the end of the day, it is you that lives with the consequences —good or bad —of the choices you 36

If you don’t make some choices about your business and life, then you won’t be able to succeed. “I don’t know” is just a fancy way of saying, “I’m afraid I’ll change my mind,” or, “what if I choose wrong?” or “what if I don’t want to do this forever?” Choices don’t have to be forever (unless you’re having a child). Life is everchanging. What you do now isn’t what you have to do 10 years from now. Look at where you are at and make some choices about what you want based on what you DO KNOW NOW.
