  1. Large Flow Classification in Flow Aware Routingdraft-yong-pwe3-lfc-fat-pw-01 {lucyyong,yangpeilin}@huawei.com IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands

  2. traffic flows ECMP Paths Flow Based Routing in PSN • Used in equal cost multi paths (ECMP) for load balance • Hashing dispersion is the common practice • simple and stateless • works well if # of flows are substantially large and the bandwidth per flow are well balanced IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands

  3. Source from Caida Source from Carrier Flow Traffic Pattern • Today’s Flow traffic pattern does not show the bandwidth balance in Internet and carrier network • Few flows with significant high rates while the rest are very low rate • Flow traffic pattern indicate that hashing load balance has an issue • uneven load balance due to the unbalanced flow BW IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands http://www.caida.org/data/monitor

  4. Propose Large Flow Classification • Differentiate large flow packets from the rest of packets enable different treatments • Apply different flow routing algorithms for the small flow packets and the large flow packets • Split ECMP paths for small flows and large flows • Or other implementation • Simulation show the significant improvement on flow pattern with unbalanced BW Note: LFC is only used in flow routing, is not used in packet forward and DiffServ process IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands

  5. Load Balance Improvement w/ LFC • In E-ECMP, the difference between high and low path utilization is less than 10% of the path capacity, STD is 0.0328 • In T-ECMP, the difference between high and low path utilization can be over 50% of the path capacity, STD is 0.1939 IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands

  6. Change From Previous • Move Enhanced ECMP section to Appendix • Propose for large flow classification for load balance • Change the draft name • Text Editing IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands

  7. Acknowledgement Authors like to thank Stewart Bryant, Frederic Jounay, Simon Delord, Raymond Key for their review and comments Next Step - Open for more feedbacks - Adopt as WG draft  IETF78, Maastricht Netherlands
