Period 6 Pros and Cons • Ability to earn more money • Increases the flows of trade, capitol, and information • Raise in living standards • Creates more jobs • Decrease poverty levels • Establishing industry codes to keep workers safe • Economic growth increases income for the poor • Companies in other countries pay higher wages then the companies in their own country • Spread of technology leads to improvements in literacy, health, and personal wealth • Healthy competition • Long hours • Pay lower wages than a “living wage” • Poor work conditions/unsafe environments • Slave labor/child labor • Environmental devastation/deforestation/ • Destruction of rivers • Pollution • Great profits for companies/less than equitable pay for products created • Increase in inequality • No workers rights

Period 5 Pros and Cons • Provide jobs in LDCs • Life expectancy in China doubled • Workers are able to earn more money • Get paid above the average in their countries • Infant mortality rates declined • Adult illiteracy declined • Child slavery has decreased • School enrollment rates rose in LDCs • Expansion of technology led to improvements in heath, literacy, and wealth • Increased economic growth from investments in 3rd world countries • Little to no workers rights • Global inequality is worsening • Corporations are manipulating economies • Corruption of companies and governments • Deforestation and pollution from factories • Depletion of valuable resources • Child labor/slaves • Poor working conditions/hours • Starvation from food shortages from depletion of agriculture due to factories producing for mass production • Dependency on market prices

Period 1 Pros & Cons • Does no harm in developing world • Has increased economic growth in developing countries • Foreign owned companies provide salaries almost 2x that of companies from the countries • Household income increased • Number of child slaves has decreased • Improvements in Health, Life expectancy, and Literacy in poor counties • 3rd world workers volunteer their hours in the factories • Unfair working hours (large number of hours worked) • Unfair compensation for products • Most companies do not meet the demands of employee decency according to Western standards • Little to no workers’ rights • Degradation of forests and rivers in poor countries, and resource depletion reduces livelihood and increases poverty • Health code violations are ignored

Period 2 Pros and Cons • Companies in countries from the U.S. or other well-developed countries pay higher wages than companies in the ldc themselves. • Volunteering to work in the factories • Infant mortality rates have declined • Life expectancy in countries such as China has doubled • Adult illiteracy rates have declined • Increase in technology has increased life expectancy, literacy rates, and health • Reduces ability of LDCs to create and sell their own products • Increases debt and poverty • Exploits child labor • Unfair working conditions • Increase in pollution in developing counties • Government sponsored cartels are not concerned with the poor • Severe poverty still exists and aren’t improving

Period 3 Pros & Cons • Driving force to go green • Globalization has facilitated the spread of technologies that have contributed to dramatic improvements in health, life expectancy and literacy in poor countries. • MNC pays a wage premium • Life expectancy doubles in countries like China • Regions lacking MNCs have worse child labor • Worse child labor rates and the smallest reduction • Provide very competitive environment • Low wages for long hours • Abuse of workers • Government doesn’t care for workers • No regulation • Pollution due to factories – ex. China • No relationship between the price of a product and the wages paid • No health benefits

Period 5 Pros and Cons • Gives wages to people who didn’t have jobs • Allows people to work longer hours • Obtains some kind of employment • Spread “Green” technologies • African and Asian child labor rates dropped • Poor make more money working for MNC than companies in their own countries. • Exploits poor people in less developed countries • Globalization creates higher inequality • Poverty and inequality spreads rapidly • Does not follow child labor laws • Larger MNC make it harder for local companies to compete • Increase in the degradation of forestry • Labor laws don’t apply to MNC in less developed countries

Period 6 Pros and Cons • More jobs for people in less developed countries • Children did not report being forced to work(child labor) • Spread of technologies have contributed to dramatic improvements in health, life expectancy, and literacy in poor countries • Bad cases are rare • High quality- low priced products • MNCs violate labor rights • Companies don’t meet the demands of decency • Low wages (especially for women) • Hinders the economic progress of smaller countries • Workers are often exploited and work long hours without breaks

Introduction example • Globalization is the ….(definition) With the increase of Multinational Corporations which spread the development and wealth of products, technology, and services to less developed countries, there has been an increasingly more positive impact than negative. Globalization and MNCs positively impact the world in the areas of national economic stability, personal wealth improvement, and increased health and life expectancy.
