Why are we discussing Sudden Cardiac Arrest? • SB 60 – Jeremy Nelson and Nick Blakely Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act March, 2019 • “All Georgia schools (public and private including charters) that have one or more grades 6-12 shall hold an informational meeting twice per year regarding the symptoms and warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest. At such informational meeting, an information sheet on sudden cardiac arrest symptoms and warning signs shall be provided to each student’s parent or guardian. In addition to students, parents or guardians, coaches, and other school officials, such informational meetings may include physicians, pediatric cardiologists and athletic trainers. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO COMPLETE THE SIGN-IN SHEET NOTING YOUR ATTENDANCE.

  3. What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest? • “…when the heart stops beating, suddenly and unexpectedly. Out of nowhere. The heart just stops pumping blood.” • Leading cause of death in young athletes, although rare and usually happens to a previously healthy athlete.

  4. Causes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest? • Electrical Abnormalities • Structural Abnormalities • Trauma • Infection -Most conditions can be treated if discovered.

  5. Warning Signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest? Learn the Early Warning Signs If you or your child has had one or more of these signs, see your primary care physician: • Fainting suddenly and without warning, especially during exercise or in response to loud sounds like doorbells, alarm clocks or ringing phones. • Unusual chest pain or shortness of breath during exercise. • Family members who had sudden, unexplained and unexpected death before age 50. • Family members who have been diagnosed with a condition that can cause sudden cardiac death, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or Long QT syndrome. • A seizure suddenly and without warning, especially during exercise or in response to loud sounds like doorbells, alarm clocks or ringing phones.

Prevention Strategies-Sudden Cardiac Arrest? • Recognize the Warning Signs • Reflect on Cardiac issues in your family history • Get an annual pre-participation physical • On/after April 1st of the preceding school year (ex: 2019-20…April 1, 2019 or after) • Physicals expire on the last day of school (May 2020) • Need new physical after April 1, 2020 for summer 2020 and beyond
