  18. Parsha 1 There was a man among the P'rushim, named Nakdimon, who was a ruler of the Judeans. 2 This man came to Yeshua by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know it is from God that you have come as a teacher; for no one can do these miracles you perform unless God is with him."

  19. Parsha 3 "Yes, indeed," Yeshua answered him, "I tell you that unless a person is born again from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." 4 Nakdimon said to him, "How can a grown man be `born'? Can he go back into his mother's womb and be born a second time?" 5 Yeshua answered, "Yes, indeed, I tell you that unless a person is born from water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.

  20. Parsha 6 What is born from the flesh is flesh, and what is born from the Spirit is spirit. Stop being amazed at my telling you that you must be born again 7 from above! 8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it's going. That's how it is with everyone who has been born from the Spirit." 9 Nakdimon replied, "How can this happen?"

  21. Parsha 10 Yeshua answered him, "You hold the office of teacher in Isra'el, and you don't know this? 11 Yes, indeed! I tell you that what we speak about, we know; and what we give evidence of, we have seen; but you people don't accept our evidence! 12 If you people don't believe me when I tell you about the things of the world, how will you believe me when I tell you about the things of heaven? 13 No one has gone up into heaven; there is only the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.

  22. Parsha 14 Just as Moshe lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only and unique Son, so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life, instead of being utterly destroyed.

  23. Parsha 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but rather so that through him, the world might be saved. 18 Those who trust in him are not judged; those who do not trust have been judged already, in that they have not trusted in the one who is God's only and unique Son.

  24. Parsha 19 "Now this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light. Why? Because their actions were wicked. 20 For everyone who does evil things hates the light and avoids it, so that his actions won't be exposed. 21 But everyone who does what is true comes to the light, so that all may see that his actions are accomplished through God."

  25. Blessed are You, LORD, giver of the Torah.

  26. We’re going to start doing something new every Shabbat here at Beit HaTorah time permitting! We’re going to do a reading from one of the following: the Apocrypha, Psudopigrapha, Josephus, Philo, works from the Rabbis and Sages. Extra Readings

  27. With our busy schedules during the week, we often have just enough time for our daily Bible readings so I wanted you to get some other material on Shabbat as well and I figured what a better way then to do it right after our Parshas. So today if you can turn to your Bibles to Daniel chapter 14, that’d be great. Extra Readings

  28. Today we will read from Daniel chapter 14. Yes there are Chapters of Daniel that are not in your Bible. There’s a Chapter 13 and a Chapter 14! Both of these Chapters were in the King James Bible in 1611 We call these chapters deuterocanonical Extra Readings

  29. The Deuterocanonical books are considered canonical by Roman Catholics, but are considered non-canonical by most Protestants. The word deuterocanonical comes from the Greek meaning “second canon”. Should these chapters be included in our Bible today? Extra Readings

  30. I think we should have ALL the ancient writings available. So let’s begin our journey into Scholarship. Daniel chapter 14 verses 1-22 Extra Readings

  31. DanielChapter 14 1 After King Astyages was laid with his fathers, Cyrus the Persian succeeded to his kingdom. 2 Daniel was the king's favorite and was held in higher esteem than any of the friends of the king. 3 The Babylonians had an idol called Bel, and every day they provided for it six barrels of fine flour, forty sheep, and six measures of wine. Extra Readings

  32. 4 The king worshiped it and went every day to adore it; but Daniel adored only his God. 5 When the king asked him, "Why do you not adore Bel?" Daniel replied, "Because I worship not idols made with hands, but only the living God who made heaven and earth and has dominion over all mankind." Extra Readings

  33. 6 Then the king continued, "You do not think Bel is a living god? Do you not see how much he eats and drinks every day?" 7 Daniel began to laugh. "Do not be deceived, O king," he said; "it is only clay inside and bronze outside; it has never taken any food or drink." Extra Readings

  34. 8 Enraged, the king called his priests and said to them, "Unless you tell me who it is that consumes these provisions, you shall die. 9 But if you can show that Bel consumes them, Daniel shall die for blaspheming Bel." Daniel said to the king, "Let it be as you say!" 10 There were seventy priests of Bel, besides their wives and children. When the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel, Extra Readings

  35. 11 the priests of Bel said, "See, we are going to leave. Do you, O king, set out the food and prepare the wine; then shut the door and seal it with your ring. 12 If you do not find that Bel has eaten it all when you return in the morning, we are to die; otherwise Daniel shall die for his lies against us." Extra Readings

  36. 13 They were not perturbed, because under the table they had made a secret entrance through which they always came in to consume the food. 14 After they departed the king set the food before Bel, while Daniel ordered his servants to bring some ashes, which they scattered through the whole temple; the king alone was present. Then they went outside, sealed the closed door with the king's ring, and departed. Extra Readings

  37. 15 The priests entered that night as usual, with their wives and children, and they ate and drank everything. 16 Early the next morning, the king came with Daniel. 17 "Are the seals unbroken, Daniel?" he asked. And Daniel answered, "They are unbroken, O king." Extra Readings

  38. 18 As soon as he had opened the door, the king looked at the table and cried aloud, "Great you are, O Bel; there is no trickery in you." 19 But Daniel laughed and kept the king from entering. "Look at the floor," he said; "whose footprints are these?" Extra Readings

  39. 20 "I see the footprints of men, women, and children!" said the king. 21 The angry king arrested the priests, their wives, and their children. They showed him the secret door by which they used to enter to consume what was on the table. 22 He put them to death, and handed Bel over to Daniel, who destroyed it and its temple. END Extra Readings

  41. Today’s Joke • About a century ago, the Pope decided that all the Jews had to leave the Vatican. Naturally there was a big uproar from the Jewish community. So the Pope made a deal. He would have a religious debate with a member of the Jewish community. If the Jew won, the Jews could stay. If the Pope won, the Jews would leave. So the Jews picked a middle aged man named Moishe to represent them. But Moishe asked for one addition to the debate. To make it more interesting, neither side would be allowed to talk. The pope agreed.

  42. The day of the great debate came. Moishe and the Pope sat opposite each other for a full minute before the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. Moishe quickly looked back at him and raised one finger. After another minute, the Pope waved his finger in a circle around his head. Right away, Moishe pointed directly to the ground. After some time, the Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine. Without blinking, Moishe pulled out an apple. The Pope stood up and cried, "I give up. This man is too good. The Jews can stay." Today’s Joke

  43. An hour later, the cardinals were all around the Pope asking him what happened. The Pope said: "First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there was still one God. Then I waved my finger around me to show him that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground and showing that God was also right here with us. I pulled out the wine and the wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of original sin. He had an answer for everything. What could I do?" Today’s Joke

  44. Meanwhile, the Jewish community had crowded around Moishe. "What happened?" they asked. "Well," said Moishe, "First he said to me that the Jews had three days to get out of here. I told him that not one of us was leaving. Then he told me that this whole city would be cleared of Jews. I let him know that we were staying right here." "And then?" asked a woman. Today’s Joke

  45. "I don't know," said Moishe. “He took out his lunch and I took out mine." Today’s Joke

  46. The Parsha is taken from our passage in John chapter 3. Instead of my usual running commentary, I’ll be using a topical exegesis format today. 1 There was a man among the P'rushim, named Nakdimon, who was a ruler of the Judeans. The Rebbe’s ParshaJohn 3

  47. The P’rushim are the Pharisees, that’s how we say Pharisee in Hebrew. It means “set apart ones”. The Rebbe’s ParshaJohn 3 פרושים

  48. And this is where we are introduced to Nakdimon, Nicodemus. Who was this Nicodemus? The text here tells us something… The Rebbe’s ParshaJohn 3

  49. It says he was a ruler of the Jews. Well that’s kind of vague. What else can we decipher from this verse? Well, Nakdimon is a Greek name which means “people’s victory” Ok, so what’s his Hebrew name? The Rebbe’s ParshaJohn 3 Νικόδημος

  50. If you translate His Greek name into Hebrew it is Nakkai. Well, we know who Nakkai is. We read about him in the Mishna Sanhedrin 43a The Rebbe’s ParshaJohn 3
