  1. 18th ANNIVERSARY SERIES: GOING BACK TO OUR ROOTS TO UNDERSTAND OUR PRESENT MINISTRY AS WE CHART OUR FUTURE COURSE I. LET’S BEGIN WITH OUR STORY II. INTRODUCTION: THE NEED TO RETURN TO THE ANCIENT PATHS What Is Pragmatism? Ministering In An Age Of Itching Ears

  2. III. BIBLICAL BASIS FOR THE ANCIENT PATHS Read Jer 6:16. The Context of Jeremiah Jeremiah’s message in this book, especially in chapters 2-45, was of doom directed mostly to his own people in Judah.

  3. Application We all know that this call to return to the ancient paths is just as relevant to the church today as it was thousands of years ago when Jeremiah addressed it to Judah. ~ The church today has in general departed from the ancient paths by having a philosophy in life and ministry that is directed by something else other than the Bible.

  4. The New Paradigm is an approach that distorts the gospel and supporting it is to share in an evil work and to fall under the condemnation Paul wrote in Gal 1:8-9. But the new Paradigm is only one of the departures we see in the churches in our country today. ~ There are present circumstances that have made it urgent for us to steer our way back to the ancient paths.

  5. We can expect that in these last days, there will be more departures from the faith that will occur. ~ 2Tim 4:3-4 The church should go back to the ancient paths because God will only honor this old yet tested way.

  6. IV. HOW TO GO BACK TO THE ANCIENT PATHS Read Jer 6:16. The steps to go back to the ancient paths: 1. STAND AT THE CROSSROADS AND LOOK. ~ Stand and look tells us that when we meet a crossroad, our response should be to stop first and not just to walk in any path as directed by impulse.

  7. Many church leaders are quite impatient to discover what new technique or formula will work in their church. ~ Many jump immediately and join what’s popular and seems to be working. ~ The book of Proverbs tells us that there is a way that seems right to man but the end of which is destruction. ~ Not willing to examine: Is this of God? Where do you find this in the Bible? Is this consistent with Scripture?

  8. 2. ASK FOR THE ANCIENT PATHS, ASK WHERE THE GOOD WAY IS. ~ The Hebrew for ask carries the idea of “inquiring with earnestness, even to the point of demanding.” ~ Few seem to be asking the right questions and demanding the right answers. ~ Most want to be politically correct and not offend others or not sound judgmental or divisive.

  9. 3. WALK IN IT. Walk implies walking along continually. ~ It means to persevere in the ancient paths. ~ It is not just to try once and then discontinue if it does not work. ~ To walk in it is to walk in the ancient paths personally and perseveringly. Let us follow Jeremiah’s call to stand first and look, to ask for the ancient paths and then firmly and perseveringly walk in it.
