  2. Energy Drinks do what? • Increase alertness? • Help concentration and focus? • Improve Performace?

  3. Look Familiar? • Ingredients/Contents of your energy drink • Guarana-also under the name Guaranine • Carnitine- or another name is L-Carnitine • Glucuronlactone • Inositol • Panax Ginseng • Vitamin B6 and B12 • Taurine • Sugar • Caffeine

  4. What do they “seem” to do for us? • Carnitine- improves endurance, increases fat metabolism, protects against cardiovascular disease • Glucuronlactone-promotes excretion of toxins and protects from cancer • Guarana- increases energy, enhances physical performance and promotes weight loss in individuals • Inositol- decreases triglyceride and cholesterol levels, lowering risk of cardiovascular disease • Panax Ginseng- Speeds up illness recovery, improves mental, physical and sexual performance, controls blood glucose and lowers blood pressure • Taurine- lowers risk of diabetes, epilepsy, and high blood pressure

  5. The truth! • Carnitine, Glucuronlactone, Inositol, Panax Ginseng have no clinical or scientific evidence that support these claims in energy drinks • Taurine has no clinical evidence on lowering the risk for diabetes and epilepsy but may help lower risk of blood pressure • Guarana’s main component is caffeine, for it helps increase energy, and suppresses appetite

  6. Sugar and Caffeine • Caffeine can bring adverse affects if too much is consumed. Having Guarana and caffeine in a energy drink may double or triple the amount of caffeine in one drink. • Sugar that is consumed in energy drinks bring people the “crashing effect” and insulin spikes. It also gives low serotonin levels...which make you crave more sugar

  7. They do harm us?? • Addictive.. • Become more dehydrated if used when working out—Diuretic: causes people to loose more water..working out? • Dangerous to consume energy drinks and alcohol: Depressant + Stimulant = think about it. • Overdose of caffeine: Can cause headaches, anxiety, heart palpitations (arrhythmias), increase in blood pressure, irritability, sleeplessness (insomnia), can bother pre-existing heart complications
