  1. WELCOME TO THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENTFOR NEW MAJORSAND TRANSFER STUDENTS

  2. How to begin Make sure Admissions has evaluated your transfer credits before you start the registration process. Familiarize yourself with the following requirements for the major…

  3. CREDIT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR • To complete a Psychology major you need a minimum of 36 credits: • 15 -16 credits from required courses, and the remaining 21 credits from electives. • Courses transferred as Psychology 499 do not count toward the major but count toward graduation.

  4. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR There are 4 required courses: • Psych 101 (Introductory Psychology) • Psych 107 (Statistical Methods) • Psych 213W (Experimental Psychology) • One course from Psych 311-321 series (Advanced Experimental Psychology)

  5. PREREQUISITES • The Department strictly enforces prerequisites, so be sure you have the required prerequisites before attempting to register for a class. • If a course is listed as a prerequisite for a class, you cannot take it in the same semester as that class.

  6. REQUIRED COURSE PREREQUISITES • Psych 101 - No prerequisite • Psych 107 - No prerequisite • Psych 213W - Psych 101 and Psych 107 • Psych 311-321 –Psych 213W

  7. TIME TO COMPLETE THE MAJOR • Because of the prerequisite structure, you need a minimum of three semesters to complete the required courses. • If you co-major in Education, it may take even longer because of Education Department requirements.

  8. ADVANCED COURSE REQUIREMENT • Students who declare the major after Fall 2009 also, in addition to the Advanced Laboratory Course, have to take 2 elective courses from the 300-level courses.

  9. If you are a transfer student, you will be registering after regularly matriculated students. Many of the popular and required courses may be closed. The Psychology Department does not give overtallies. Once a course is filled, every seat in the room is accounted for and there is no more room. The instructor does not have the authority to put you into the class.

  10. WHAT TO DO? • Students can be placed on waiting lists for EVENING and WEEKEND courses, but NOT for DAY session courses. • For evening courses, students must fill out an application found at Razran 299. • For weekend courses, you should contact the Weekend College office in Kiely 137.

  11. For your first semester at Queens College, flexibility is the name of the game. You might put off taking courses required for the major until the next semester. Sign up for any open Psychology course that interests you and for which you have the prerequisites.

  12. REGISTRATION • You will be able to register for courses online using esims. If a class becomes available because someone dropped it or because a student was dropped by the Bursar for non-payment it will become available online and the first person who gets to it can get in.

  13. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ • As you can see from the previous slide, it is EXTREMELY important to pay your bills or make sure that financial aid payments have been applied to your bill before the deadline. • If the Bursar drops you, the department cannot put you back into the course.

  14. HOW TO AVOID THESE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE PREREGISTRATION

  15. PREREGISTRATION:WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO DO IT • Required courses are always in great demand. The Psychology Department offers preregistration to its majors, so that majors will have first crack at Psychology courses. • Preregistration is done on esims in descending order by class. • Preregistration dates and times are posted on our website.

  16. OUR WEBSITE AND LISTSERV • You can find important information on our website: www.qcpages.qc.edu/Psychology • Be among the first in your class to receive important departmental information by joining our listserv. Our homepage tells you how to join.

  17. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MISS PREREGISTRATION • If you miss preregistration, you will have to take your chances with whatever courses are left after the majors have registered. • If you miss preregistration and then come to the department asking to be put into closed courses, you will be disappointed to find out that even if you are an upper senior, you can’t be put into a closed course and might have to spend an extra semester waiting for an open section.

  18. SUMMARY • The first semester for transfer students can be difficult. • Later semesters need not be so, if you take advantage of preregistration. • Be sure to sign up for our listserv. • Check our website for answers to questions about the department and the major requirements.
