  1. The ‘Booty Call’: A Compromise Between Men’s and Women’s Ideal Mating Strategies Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009) Journal of Sex Research 46(5), 460-470 Summary by Alex Swain, Marissa Lerner, and Robert Como

  2. The ‘Booty Call’ “Booty Calls tend to utilize various communication mediums to facilitate sexual contact among friends…” "Few authors have examined how entire relationships themselves could  be viewed as compromises."  "[The booty call] may be a type of compromise relationship because it  contains elements that appeal to both genders."  Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). The ‘Booty Call’: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journal of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  4. A Relationship of Compromise Mating Strategies Between the Sexes Both genders want as many benefits as possible while incurring the least amount of cost -Men: more likely to seek numerous sex partners with little investment -Women: place greater value on long-term committed relationships Evolved Sex Differences -Women have greater parental investment than do men and are often choosier seeking long-term mates who will continue to invest resources -Men comparatively have minimal parental investment and are more willing to engage in casual sexual encounters with numerous partners (Buss, 1989 ; Trivers, 1972) Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). The ‘Booty Call’: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journal of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  5. The Current Study • Purposes • 1. Obtain General Descriptive Measures on booty call initiation, acceptance and rejection • 2. Examine specific aspects of the booty call that distinguish it from other types of casual sex encounters. • Hypotheses • 1. Men would be more likely than women to initiate booty calls, and women would be more likely to receive booty calls  • 2. Predicted that the most common method would be the phone  • 3. Physical attractiveness would be an especially important feature in recipients of booty calls  • 4. Women, more than men, should consider other factors such as friendship and personality to be important  • 5a. Men, more than women, would cite that the reason a booty call relationship did not progress to a more committed relationship would be because they just wanted a sexual relationship  • 5b. Women should be more likely than men to report that the booty call relationship did not progress to a more committed relationship because the other person did not want a long-term relationship  Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). The ‘Booty Call’: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journal of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  6. The Current Study Study #1 Predictions 1 and 2 -Investigated the frequency of booty calls which they initiated and received and the mode of communication used. Participants (61 College Undergraduates) were administered a questionnaire entitled “Mating in the Modern Day,” and asked to report the number of booty calls initiated/received within the past several months and to indicate the medium of communication used. In preparation for Study 2, participants were also asked to provide criterion data for reasons for initiating/receiving, or refusing a booty call, features of individuals they have engaged or refused, and reasons why the booty call did not evolve into a more committed relationship. Study #2 Predictions 3-5 -Investigated why booty calls are accepted and rejected and why they do not transition into long-term relationships. Using an criterion data from the results of Study 1, participants (75 college undergraduates) were asked to rate reasons for accepting/rejecting booty calls. In addition, participants were asked to rate reasons why the booty calls did not transition into long-term relationships. Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). 9. Conclusions -Women received more booty calls than men supporting the theory that men have a greater desire to pursue sex - However, men did not report initiating more requests than women -Phone calls are the most common way of initiating a booty call -In both genders physical attractiveness was a major determining factor -Men tended to value items related to greater sexual access than women where as women valued items of past friendship, compatibility and personality -Men reported only wanting sex while women reported partners lack of interest in long term dating for not transitioning into a long-term relationship -Progression may depend more on men’s desires Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). The ‘Booty Call’: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journal of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  10. The Compromise Reexamined -Men prefer low investment sexual opportunities while women prefer long-term, committed relationships -Each Side gets at least some benefit they are seeking -Ongoing sexual access with one or more mates for males -More affection than a one-night-stand and potential for a long-term partner for females -Personality was way more important for rejecting rather than accepting booty calls for females -Women reported relationship not transitioning due to other person’s lack of interest Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason. M. J. (2009). The ‘Booty Call’: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journal of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.
