  2. The erie canal begins • The Erie Canal is a waterway that travels from Buffalo to Albany. It is different from other water passages because it was man made. • In 1810 Dewitt Clinton suggested digging the Erie Canal but president Thomas Jefferson laughed at the idea. • The Erie Canal was built so people could send goods faster and cheaper. Also it was built in 1817 and finished in 1825. It took 8 years to build the Erie Canal. • Dewitt Clinton and the immigrants helped build the Erie Canal.

  3. Geography • Lake Erie and the Atlantic Ocean are the 2 bodies of water that are connected to the Erie Canal. • Before the Erie Canal was built, it took 1 month to travel from Albany to Buffalo, but after it was built it took 1 week. • Buffalo, Albany, Troy, Syracuse and Rochester are some cities that are along the Erie Canal in New York State.

  4. How the erie canal is/was used • The Erie Canal was useful to many people. It made trade a lot cheaper and faster. • It also opened markets for the West and the Midwest. • The Erie Canal linked the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes together. • The Erie Canal transformed America. Before it was built the only way to get from the Eastern seaboard to the Great Lakes was on a complicated route. It also saved New York a lot of money. • The Erie Canal is still used today. The Canal is a perfect spot for people who canoe to relax and have fun.

  5. fACTS About the erie canal • The Erie Canal cost 7 million dollars to build. • The length of the Canal is 363 miles. The width is 40 feet and the depth is 4 feet. • A lock is a gate that opens and closes and changes the water level so that the boat doesn’t crash. • Locks helped boats pass from a section of the Canal at one water level to another. • The gates from the locks opened at an angle pointed upstream. • The boat were flat bottomed.
