  1. The Magnificent end to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. By: Richard Howell Alexandra Bentz Christiana Bentz Adam Shelkey

  2. SUMMARY TIME!!!!!! • The Hermit starts to sing a hymn • Everything on the boat is dead and that the ship is dieing, the very wood rots. • The ship sinks and the mariner is in the water floating and was saved by the Pilot. • The four people in the boat are the Pilot, the Pilot’s boy, the Hermit and the mariner. • They went to land from there. • He finishes telling the story and the wedding party ignore his advice and disregard his tale.

  3. Why the misfortune? • The crime of the albatross being shot is the reason for the curse upon the ship. • The mariner is cursed for his transgression and the crew of the ship is made to pay for it. Unlike Jonah, the mariner stayed upon the ship to accept his fate, dooming the rest of his crew. • The mariner is left alive and landlocked to tell his tale for all his time.

  4. People are Fickle • The wedding guests do not accept his story as one to be pondered or thought of. They take his story as one of fancy and entertainment. • They do not see the macabre truth inside the story and ignore the deeper meaning to the story.

  5. ALLUSION TIME • Just like Cassandra, the mariner is doomed to tell his truth but would never be heard for what it is. • The journey of Odysseus is like that of the mariner for he was traveling on the sea and angered the fates by ignoring the rules of gods.

  6. And Even More! • The fate of the mariner is mirrored in Creon’s loss of all those around him. Creon’s whole family dies and only he is left to die the burden as all the mariner’s crew dies for his mistake. • The mariner is forced to punish himself as Reverend Dimmesdale flogged his back for the sin he has committed. Just as the Dimmesdale must admit his sin to the world, the mariner must travel the land and tell his tale of woe.

  7. And last but not least! • Jesus is the ultimate symbol to the ancient mariner in the way that both offer their gifts freely and is not accepted immediately by all. The superhuman qualities mingled with common frailty creates another link between both great figures.
