  2. Zambian prisons are exploding Zambia’s prison population is high,as seen in the chart. Because of a serious backlog in the legal systems, many inmates wait in prison as long as seven years to come to trial . Overcrowding effects include overburdened sanitary facility, spreading communicable diseases such as tuberculosis STD, HIV/AIDS and increased tension and cases of violence.

  3. Restorative Justice Restorative justice in Africa has been highlighted by recovery of indigenous justice practices, use of community service to address chronic prison overcrowding. Policy change with restorative justice will be a method of reducing court and prison overcrowding.

Retributive justice vs. Restorative Justice • Problem defined narrowly,  abstractly, a legal infraction, only legal variables relevant state as victim • Actors State (active)  offender (passive) • Problem defined relationally as violation of people overall context relevant people as victims • Actors victim & offender primary with state & community

  6. OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF CURE ZAMBIA TRAINING PROGRAM This program is designed to reduce prison overcrowding by diverting cases, mostly minor offences into mediation process. In mediation, we seek to bring offender together with the people they have wronged to find ways to repair the harm, explore forgiveness and make plans for their transition back into the community. The graduates of this training program will seek peaceful resolution, including an exchange of restitution and forgiveness between offender and victim.
