What is Social Justice? • The idea of creating a society that is based on equality and values human rights • Justice refers to the use of laws to control and punish unacceptable behaviours that infringe on human rights • Social justice has a connection to the morality (what is ‘good’ and ‘bad’) created by a society GLS1O0

Who is Louise Arbour? • Our namesake is the President and CEO of the International Crisis Group • The International Crisis Group is a non-profit, independent organization committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflict “There are millions of people all over the world, right now, who are looking to the United Nations for protection and redress against the violation of their rights and deprivation of their freedoms.” GLS1O0

  6. Louise Arbour and the United Nations • From 2004 to 2008, Louise Arbour served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) • The OHCHR has a mandate to protect and promote all human rights from the international community GLS1O0

Louise Arbour:Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia • She was the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia from 1996-99 • She issued the first ever international warrant for the arrest of then sitting Yugoslavia president Slobodan Milosevic on charges of murder and crimes against humanity • In 1999 she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada GLS1O0

Clip #1: Arrival (~10 minutes) • Shows the arrival of Louise Arbour to the Hague, and her shock about the fact that over the past three years minimal arrests of war criminals have been made by the Tribunal • Clip #2: Intelligence (~12 minutes) • Shows the steps leading to the indictment of then Yugoslavia president Slobodan Milosevic by Arbour and her team at the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia.
