What is the Scientific Method?

What is the Scientific Method?. It is the steps someone takes to identify a question, develop a hypothesis, design and carry out steps or procedures to test the hypothesis, and document observations and findings to share with someone else. In other words, it’s a way to solve a problem.

  1. What is the ScientificMethod? • It is the steps someone takes to identify a question, develop a hypothesis, design and carry out steps or procedures to test the hypothesis, and document observations and findings to share with someone else. • In other words, it’s a way to solve a problem.

  2. Scientist have to take the time to think logically when they are investigating a question or problem. • They break things down into many steps that make sense.

  3. The Scientific Method The Scientific Method involves the following steps: Problem or question Research/observations Hypothesis Experiment/method Results/data Conclusion

  4. The Scientific Method State the problem or question~ When you ask a question or describe problem you wish to solve.

  5. The Scientific Method Research/observation~ You observe something in the material world, using your senses. You may also find out what other people, books, ormagazines say about the problem/question. AH—Look at this!

  6. The Scientific Method Hypothesis~ Your predict what you think the answer to your question might be

  7. The Scientific Method Controlled experiment~The experiment is a test to find out if your hypothesis is correct. Experiments must have a control to be valid.Validity means your experiment was good enough to convince others that your results were accurate. A valid experiment would show your hypothesis to be correct or incorrect. Proving a hypothesis wrong is just as valuable as proving it correct.

  8. Scientific Experimentation • An experiment is a controlled test. • Consist of several variables. Control variable-those which could change, but are not allowed to. Independent (manipulated variable)-variablechanged by the experimenter. The part you do something to. Dependent (responding variable)- the response from the independent variable that’s being measured. • Only onevariable should be changed at a time.

  9. Scientific Experimentation cont….. There are generally two parts to the experiment: • Control group~ group exposed to normal conditions. • Experimental groups~ group exposed to the experimental treatment.

  10. Scientific Experimentation cont….. • Generally a control is the part of an experiment that is left alone. • The control is compared withthe experimental part. • The experimental sectionis what you change or do, to a sample, during the experiment.

  11. The Scientific Method Results~ Consist of information obtained during the experiment. Results are whathappened and may be presented as data or in words. Specific facts, like numbers, are called data. Data is usually written in a table, known as a datatable and is often placed in a graph. A graphmakes it easier to "see" what happened during theexperiment.

  12. The Scientific Method Conclusion- you restate your hypothesis and explain whether the experimentshowed your prediction to be correct or not and try to explain your results.

  13. Let’s Review The Scientific Method
