  5. SIDING MAINTAINENCE PROBLEMS Siding is intended to keep your home beautiful and protect your home from the elements. Siding that won’t hold paint Siding that deteriorates Maintaining your home is very expensive, and it seams like it never ends. Unsightly seams Siding that follows waves in the wall Permanent Solutions to the these problems are available

  6. Factors that cause the problems… Most of the time, we keep the house closed up to save on heating and air-conditioning costs. The humid air transfers through the walls, creating problems. Your home breaths. When creating a barrier on the exterior of your wall the moisture is trapped. Damp insulation has less R-Value. The moisture transferring through the wall just pushes the paint loose. The more you paint, the problem just gets worse. Cooking, showers, plants, and just living in our homes make the humidity rise. Face caulking around windows and doors will dry out and separate, and actually creates a funnel to trap more water behind the siding. Trapping moisture behind the paint will cause siding buckle and to deteriorate. Using materials that allow humidity to transfer makes your home more efficient.

  7. TRIM MAINTAINENCE PROBLEMS Trim is intended to border and define windows and doors, and to keep the elements from getting behind the siding. Trim boards that won’t hold paint Trim boards that deteriorate Maintaining your home is very expensive, and it seams like it never ends. Soffits that won’t hold paint Fascia board that are deteriorating Summary of page

  8. Factors that cause the problems… Just like siding, moisture is the cause of the maintenance problems. Humid air transfers through the materials and around the operating parts of the windows. Moisture condensing on the glass Humidity escaping around the framing Ongoing maintenance to your home becomes expensive over time. Ice Damming Roof Problems Humidity transfer through the wood Inadequate Ventilation Investing in permanent solutions is the best solution.

  9. INSTALL OVER THE EXISTING SIDING When the existing siding is not deteriorated, it just will not hold paint. • Use fanfold sheathing to level the wall • Description of option • Benefit of option • The cavities create a ‘dead air” space • Description of option • Benefit of option The wall needs to be leveled, so the new siding will lay straight on the wall. Leaving the existing siding on is an option when the siding is small lap wood siding.

  10. REMOVE THE EXISTING SIDING When the existing siding panels are deteriorated, and are swelling and warping. The existing siding will continue to swell, causing issues with the new siding. Removing the existing siding allows for fixing unseen problems. The old siding most likely will cause problems is left on and covered over. Removing the old siding allows for preventing future problems.

  11. CLADDING EXTERIOR TRIM Maintenance free products are intended to reduce costs of maintaining your property, and can look very nice for a long time. Incorrect installation methods will cause more problems than they solve Face Caulking separates and discolors Cladding over drip caps create funnels Investing in low quality always costs more in the end.

  12. INCORRECT CLADDING METHODS Incorrect installation methods look good temporarily, and will funnel and trap moisture, causing mildew, damp insulation, and wood framing to deteriorate. Improper installation can create costly water infiltration problems Trapping water causes wood to rot Left unfixed, structural problems result Cutting corners always cost more in the long run.

  14. STEEL SIDING Steel siding has been around for years. It is structurally more stable than pressed paper or chipboard sidings, and is an initially cost effective option. Steel siding can be seamless, allowing for eliminating unsightly seams. This product is generally a lighter strength product, due to forming it with small machines on the job site. Steel siding is installed loose, allowing for the siding to be installed without following the dips in the walls. Steel siding looks good as long as nothing dents it. Steel Siding can dent. It is normally installed hollow behind it, allowing for a ‘tinny’ sound, and dents easily. Steel siding can peal. Most steel sidings use a high quality Vinyl finish laminated to the steel panel. The warranty just covers the finish staying on. Steel Siding is a temporary solution to the maintenance problems.

  15. HARD BOARD SIDING Hardboard sidings are made of engineered wood or fiber cement, made into panels to simulate wood siding. Hardboard Siding When its pre-finished and top nailed, it allows the humidity to transfer to the outside. This product is hard nailed to the house, which means it follows the waves in the wall. Hardboard siding does not solve all of the maintenance issues. • The finish warranty is on the finish staying on the panel. Not the panel. • This material is very brittle. • This material will absorb moisture. • This type of material requires face caulking to trim around the openings. • Face caulking discolors and separates • Painting over the caulk never matches. Hard Board Sidings are a temporary solution to the maintenance problems.
