  1. Impress Your In-Laws with a Floor Plan for Your Apartment When you marry your spouse, it’s like you’re marrying their family as well. Unfortunately, not all in-laws are immediately accepting, and some can be downright combative. It makes sense. They see you as the interloper. The person taking their child away from them. And they may be worried that you’re not going to take good care of their baby. What can you do to show them that you’re putting their son’s or daughter’s needs first? One really helpful thing to do is to create a floor plan of the living space you’ll be sharing. This is true whether your spouse will be moving into your current apartment or if you are getting a new place together.

  2. What Does a Floor Plan Tell Your In-Laws? You are a planner. Floor plans show you how to organize. They provide you with accurate information, so you can make better decisions. A good floor plan can prevent you from over-buying when you don’t have space. Or let you know that you need to make some tough choices about what to bring and what to sell or give away. You are a realist. Moving in together is an abstract concept. A floor plan is the nuts and bolts of that concept. It may sound romantic to join your lives together and figure things out along the way, but that’s also how people run into unforeseen problems. A long-term romantic partnership has to involve at least some pragmatism, and your in-laws will appreciate seeing that in you. Because someone with a pragmatic streak is far more likely to be able to take good care of their child. You’ve thought about how their child fits into your life. Whatever your new living situation, both of you will doubtless be bringing parts of your previous life with you. Things from your previous life. Clothes. Artwork. Furniture.

  3. A floor plan allows you to see where those things actually fit. You can create a space for your partner’s movie collection. Or drum set. Or that antique dining table that has been passed down for several generations. You’ve made sure your apartment floor plan really will fit both of you. How a place looks only tells you so much. Square footage only tells you so much. While you’ll never really know until both of you start to move things in, getting a floor plan is the most accurate way to gauge whether or not you have enough space ahead of time. Show them that you know how to think ahead, and that you think about their child’s needs, too. Get in touch with MySitePlan today.
