  2. Cells & the Basic Unit of Life Cells are the smallest known functioning units of life Any known living organism must be made up of at least one cell It is believed that all living things evolved from a single celled organism known as the “primordial ooze”

Evolution of the Cell As the primordial ooze started to evolve, cells started to pair up and work together Some cells found new and different ways to find food and survive… some eventually made it onto land Some cells grouped so much, they formed different tissues, and then different organs within different multi celled organisms

  5. The Debate The Question ARE UNICELLULAR ORGANISMS “SIMPLE” COMPARED TO US? Agree or Disagree with that statement and think of why?

The Similarities Similarities between Multi & Unicellular Organisms All cells in both organisms have the ability to collect and burn nutrients, move, react to stimuli, get rid of waste, and reproduce The structures of the cells in both are very similar Differences between Multi & Unicellular Organisms Different cells within Multis perform very specialized functions and produce specialized substances that combine to help the organism live… Unicellulars only perform basic needs

  7. Complex or Simple? One of the cells above is a single celled organism, the other is from a multi celled organism… which is which?

  8. Complex or Simple? Whether or not a cell is from a multi celled organism or a single celled organism, the cells contain all of the same parts (organelles) and has to perform all of the same essential tasks to survive

  9. Single vs. Multi Celled Your textbook Open your textbook to pages 115 - 126 We are going to read those pages together and then have a new debate based on what we just learned NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK!

  10. Moving Up! As we move up the food chain and move from single celled organisms to multi celled organisms, the organism itself becomes more dependant on more specialized organs, but the individual cells themselves remain very much the same

  12. Right Now & Next Class In the next class you will be given a list of different structures found in all cells You will need to research what each structure does within the cell Finally, you will be building a cell model that includes all the structures you researched
