  2. “You cannot google to find out what is in your soul” Throughout the four years of my high school education, art has challenged me to think more than any of my other classes. Whether I was declining nouns in Latin, solving equations in Algebra, or analyzing texts in English, I always knew there was an answer. I always knew if I worked hard enough I could find it, and if not it was probably on Google anyway. In art there are no pre-set answers. Nothing is ever black or white, right or wrong; it just is. The answers come from within; they are what you make them to be. In my art I have come to experiment with materials including conte crayon, gloss, charcoal, ink, pencil, paint and various other mediums. I have been able to use mixed media in order to better convey messages to my audience. The concepts behind my work range from literal ideas, paying homage to fallen martyrs or relatives to abstract concepts contemplating ideas like borders and the organization of nature. I use physicality in my work to express these ideas and to create a unique aesthetic. My mind, my creativity, has been liberated through art. I am not jailed by the College Board and my ability to score a 5 on one of their almighty tests. My mind is not restricted to the size of a bubble on a test sheet nor is it best defined by a single digit number on a 4.0 scale. My mind is only limited by my ability to think more creatively and by my ability to push myself, in the words of Sr. Peggy O’Neill: “to find out what is in my soul.”
