Application Tips • Visit edabroad.nau.edu • Talk to your academic advisor about the best time for you to go abroad • Make an Appointment with your advisors: Academic and CIE • Research courses at the universities you’d like to go to (Both NAU and ISEP programs) • Check the priority deadline of programs that interest you (ISEP is significantly earlier than NAU programs so plan ahead!) www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture

  7. My ISEP Story • Director Exchange? Exchange. I got to use my scholarship and the cost was cheaper. • Host university, host country: I wanted to be in an immersion program. Out of the four available through ISEP Aix-En-Provence was the sunniest and had the feel I wanted! (Google Streetview). • Program Length: I did a semester but I wish I had done a year! Especially for anyone wanting to learn a language, I would recommend a year for full immersion! www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture

  8. My ISEP Story 4. Language: I studied French and only French! This was a unique opportunity to take classes all in another language while keeping it at my level (I took a placement test upon arrival and my classes were based on that). 5. Courses: I LOVED my language class. There was about 15 of us together for 10 hours a week and we all got so close. It was amazing to all make such language progression together. 6. Extracurricular Activities: Organized bus tours around the country side were a great way to mingle with other international and French students. www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture

  9. Why I Chose ISEP • Was able to choose the most specific program that was right for me: So many options! • Ability to use my financial aid • I had more freedom than other programs. I was able to travel and live independently while abroad and I gained more confidence in myself than if I had chosen a faculty-led or “hand holding” program. www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture

How Do I put This on My Résumé? www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture • Cultural Awareness: While abroad, you will meet and interact with people from a multitude of cultures and ironing out cultural differences can be harder than it sounds. • Language/Communication Skills: Even if you take classes in English, you will definitely pick up the basics of the host language. Going to an Anglophone country? Talk up the ways you had to communicate cultural differences. • Adaptability: Adapting to living in another country is hard work! Not to mention adapting to all of the situations in which your travel plans WILL go awry! • Complex Problem Solving: Figuring out the metro, applying for housing/visas/bank accounts, ordering dinner in Czech… You will deal with so many problems and be able to solve them! • Blogging Experience: Start a blog while abroad and have a showpiece of your writing/insights for future employers! • Initiative: Taking the initiative to study abroad is commendable enough! You’ll also have gained the initiative to ask strangers for help, find your own housing, plan your own trips… etc!

  13. After Abroad www.isep.org Outside the Box // Inside the Culture Anyone who has studied abroad will be quick to tell you how much they can’t wait to go back. But how? • Teaching English: English learning is a huge industry outside of the US. Simple certification through TESL programs (a few hundred bucks online, a bit more for in-person classes) can get you a job abroad for a year or more! Many countries don’t even require certification and will hire you with the simple requirement of being a native speaker! There are also hundreds of volunteer programs teaching English abroad! • Internships: Visit the CIE again when you get back to find out about internships and working abroad! • When I graduate I plan on becoming an Au Pair in France for a year before starting my Masters in TESOL.
