  2. Forming an SDi (Sustainable Development Initiative) An SDi is a committee of: • One teacher • Two student representatives • Representative from community • Representative from local body – Panchayat/ Municipality/ Municipal Corporation

  3. The Steps…. • Mapping a local area • Listing Sustainability Issues • Community Survey • Developing a Strategy or Action Plan • Bringing the Community Onside • Implementation • Final Project Report

  4. Area Mapping • Identify a local area • Collect information about the area through Community Representatives • Develop a relative understanding of the (sustainability) issues in the area

  5. Mapping a Local Area • Get to know the local area • Geographical, environmental, demographic, social, economic …. • Special/unique features – a sanctuary nearby, water-bodies, historical places …. • Public spaces (parks, stadia, shopping areas …), institutions • Access sources of information such as government departments, local councils, museums …… Local area – schools choose an area in which you wish to work – ward/municipality/immediate vicinity ….

Listing Sustainability Issues • List the main sustainability issues in the local area – waste management, traffic management, slums, water conservation, education related, greening of the local area, unemployment, care for the aged, social disharmony …… Problems that are relevant to the community in the local area

  7. Listing Sustainability Issues • Prioritize the issues based on analysis of primary and secondary data collected during area mapping and identify: • Environmental Impacts • Economic Impacts • Political Impacts • Social Impacts and • Cultural Impacts

  8. Community Survey • Conduct a simple survey to see how the community perceives the issues listed • Get the community to rank issues • Minimum sample size – 100 • Try to cover a representative sample – choosing people from different economic backgrounds, gender, ages ….

  10. Analysis of Survey • Identify the top issues from the community ranking • Compare with your research results from area mapping • If community perception differs, consider awareness raising as part of your implementation strategy

  11. Developing a Strategy or Action Plan • Identify and study best practices - local, national, international • Modify best practices to suit local area • Identify Stakeholders • Develop Action Plan: with specific goals, time-frame, resources required, expected outcome

  13. Getting the Community Onside • Develop a presentation that sets out your research findings as well as community survey results • Present your action plan to the community

  14. Community Participation • Include a member of any youth or community organisation in your SDi • Survey and presentation to the community • Seek partnership and support from the community – expertise, funds if necessary, data

School Partnership • Choose a partner GCS school from a different country • Interact through the GCS discussion forum and confirm the partnership with them • Continue to discuss issues and learnings and build relationships through the discussion forum Regular participation and visibility on the discussion forum is an important part of the GCS experience Make sure you upload details of your school and team on the website early to get a choice of the best partners

Implementation • Develop a Project Plan with • Budget that sets out the resources (people, money, expertise, etc.) needed to implement your plan • Fund raising ideas to procure required resources • Timeline and schedule for implementation • Ensure documentation of progress through uploading fortnightly journal reports

  17. Fortnightly Journal Reports • Document the experiences, progress, learnings, difficulties, problem solving, special contributions, any interesting happenings, any unique angles to your learning journey • Document partnership experiences and learnings

  18. Final Project Report • Compile Fortnightly Journal Reports • Presentation on the GCS Show Case Day • Final Project Report
