WHAT A strategy that prepares you for reading WHY Builds background knowledge Introduces vocabulary Starts thinking process with connections Encourages you to use information to predict WHEN Nonfiction books, magazines, textbooks, newspapers HOW Read bold face title, headings, words: connect Read captions Read maps, graphs, pictures, captions Connect information to ideas in text and to what you know Predict what you think you will learn by reading PREVIEW/CONNECT/PREDICT

  3. Questions to Ask Fiction and Nonfiction: • What is the author trying to tell you about the main character? • What does the author want you to know? • What is the big idea in this part? • What does the author mean? • Does what happened here make sense with what happened before?

Questions to Ask Questions for stories: • How do things look for this character now? • How does the author help you know that the character has changed? • How does the author make you feel about this character? Explain. • Why does the author have the character in a specific situation? What do you learn from this? • What big ideas is the author trying to help you understand? • Why does the author change the setting?

Try a Strategy That Works for Summarizing Informational Texts Directions • Jot down a topic, two fascinating facts, and how the book changed your thinking to help you summarize a nonfiction book • Jot down notes for each word or phrase below. • To write the summary, turn the notes under each heading into a complete sentence. Include the title and author of your book in your first sentence. Title and Author of Informational Book__________________________ Write your summary on a separate sheet of paper.
