  3. Characters: • Do you know who… • is the king of the Danes? • is Beowulf’s father? • is Beowulf’s successor? • lives in a lake of fire? • leaves their claw behind in Herot? • mortally wounds Beowulf? • are Beowulf’s people? • is Beowulf’s King? • is famous for killing his own family members?

Important Info: • *Beowulf takes place in Denmark • *Beowulf is an epic poem • *Hrothgar and the Danes built Herot • *The author of Beowulf is anonymous • *Anglo-saxons valued courage, strength and compassion for others • *Beowulf was most likely written in the 700’s • *In death, Beowulf was cremated and his ashes buried w/his treasures • *kennings, alliteration and caesuras were used throughout the poem • *Oddly includes both pagan and Christian religions • *Beowulf follows the epic hero cycle • *Without the presence of monsters in the story, Beowulf could not be a hero!!

Theme #1: Identity Show identity by…. • *Introductions and boasting- • *Beowulf uses his father’s name and cites achievements that gained him honor • *Reputation is everything…cares more about fame than treasure • *Fame would = immortality in death for the AS • *final battle….wants to fight alone to keep his reputation intact….even if it means leaving his people w/o a leader • *Swords/weapons- • *were most important thing to inherit from ancestors • *often given names and carried a story w/them

Theme #2: Warrior Culture • *Mead-hall- • *very important part of the daily life for warriors • *drink “mead” and listen to the scops spread word of battles • *Anglo-Saxon values • pride, honor, glory, strength, courage……all evident in Beowulf • *wanted to gain immortality by dying while fighting • *loyalty also important…..Beowulf’s men goes against AS value system • *Commemoration • *build a tower to commemorate Beowulf’s death….his ashes and treasures are buried there too

Theme #3: Exile • *being forced out/away from home…… • *Grendel and his mother are exiled from the outside world • *Dragon hoards treasure in exile, but it is of no use to him • *Beowulf makes sure that Hrothgar will take care of is men if he should die in battle w/Grendel’s mother…..does not want them to be “exiled”

  8. Theme #4: Pagan v Christian • *Beowulf probably written after Christianity accepted, so it mixes both their past religion and present one • *Good v evil present throughout the poem…. • *presence of monsters and dragons w/praise to God • *bright lights illuminate often….especially as Beowulf defeats Grendel and his mother • *darkness, down below is wear evil lurks • *Sword used on Grendel’s mother was blessed by God but had the magic of Giants • *Grendel is a descendent of Cain….first murderer

Good Warrior v Good King • *Beowulf is a better warrior or king? • *Brave, loyal to his men; takes care of them…..no concern for treasure • Good leader to his warriors • True, loyal king for 50 years in Geatland • *As king he battles less, perhaps cares more for riches • Wants tower built for him to be remembered always
