WAPOR in Latin America • In May 2011 the FOURTH Congress was held in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) with the main theme focused on Public Opinion, Democracy and New Technologies. • It was held with the support of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the Department of Political Science of the School of Philosophy and Human Sciences. • The Colonia experience is alivewith the publication of the book “Opinión pública: una mirada desde América Latina”, (Emecé, 2009) comprising a selection of the papers presented at the Congress. • The book includes 28 papers by renowned researchers and consultants and covers the main problematics linked to opinion studies. • In April 2007 the FIRST WAPOR Latin American Congress was heldin Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay). • About 150 researchers from 10 Latin American countries participated, showing the emergence of a professional Latin American community. • The THIRD Congress took place in Queretaro (Mexico) in April 2010 . • At this congress, under the auspices of the Catterberg family, the Edgardo Catterberg prize was awarded to the best paper presented at each of the WAPOR Latin American Congresses. • In October 2008, the SECOND Congress was held in Lima (Peru) organized by the Catholic University of Lima. Several well-known Latin American researchers once againparticipated. • The FIFTH Congress will be held in Bogota (Colombia) in September 2012. • It will be held with the support of the Universidad Externado de Colombia October 2008 April 2010 September 2012 April 2007 May 2009 May 2011

  3. WAPOR Latin America, Buenos Aires H.Q. In late 2009 a group of Argentine and Uruguayan researchers metin Buenos Aires with the aim to found a nonprofit association that implements the WAPOR objectives at the regional level. Founding members César Aguiar, Sara Barrón López, María Braun, Agustín Canzani, Marita Carballo, Gabriela Catterberg, Constanza Cilley, Fabián Echegaray, Guzmán Elola, Carlos Gervasoni, Luis Eduardo González, Luciana Grandi, Sebastián Halperín, Gonzalo Kmaid, Paula Magariños, Manuel Mora y Araujo, Mónica Petracci, Juan Piovani, Helena Rovner, Ignacio Zuasnábar, Ricardo Hermelo, Eduardo Fidanza, Santiago Rossi. The procedure to grant WAPOR Latin America –Buenos Aires H.Q.its legal status as a CIVIL NONPROFIT ASSOCIATION is in progress. It is expected to be completed in early 2012.

Activities fostered by WAPOR Latin America, 2009 - 2011 • PO Book • “Opinión Pública, una mirada desde América Latina” • Compiled by María Braun and Cecilia Straw Seminars *WAPOR Buenos Aires, the University of Montevideo, the University of the Republic and the Catholic University of Uruguay organized a roundtable on the role of surveys during electoral campaigns. Presentations *The book was presented at several meetings held at the following institutions : Torcuato Di Tella University (Buenos Aires); Diego Portales University (Santiago de Chile); Argentine Society of Political Analysis (Cordoba, Argentina) *We took advantage of each occasion to present WAPOR Latin America and explain the new activities that are underway in the region. • LAPO Journal • *In July 2010 issue zero of the Latin American Public Opinion Journal (Revista Latinoamericana de Opinión Pública) was published, financed by the founding members. • *We are currently launching Issue 1, which is available in print and online. A call has been sent out for papers for future issues planned for 2012. • * Characteristics: 2 yearly issues // Dossiers based in different subjects. I.e. “Democracy, Public Opinion and new technologies”// Printed and also online version at http://editorialteseo.com/archives/3686 //   Print on demand system //  Available at Amazon (soon) • Survey • In May 2010 we conducted a survey between 140 latin american Public Opinion professionals and academics, with the objective of studying the situation of the profession and get to know the critics it receives
