Collider Physics Goals • Physics priorities for the latter part of this decade • Properties of earliest, densest stage of Au+Au (QGP) • Partonic energy loss, shadowing, Cronin effect • Modification of gluon structure function in nuclei • Spin carried by gluons: DG vs x • Key observables • Open and hidden charm & beauty in pp, pA, AA • Phenix detector upgrade • Silicon vertex tracker with endcaps (LANL)

  8. J/y from B direct J/y z vertex (cm) Example, B J/y mm 0.8% x1 pz (GeV/c) High Rates even with cut: z-vertex > 0.1cm p+p: J/y20K/year Au+Au: J/y7K/year B J/y, utilizing large acceptance muon arms Silicon Endcaps crucial !

  9. Open Charm Forward Rapidity, Si Endcaps • Inclusive D=>m+X dominated by p, K decays • Muon DCA cut < 10 mm • Extracts open charm signal ! same y, pt range as J/y critical for normalization

Drell-Yan Measurements of Nucleon and NuclearStructure with the FNAL Main Injector • Ratio of the d-antiquark to u-antiquark distributions in the proton • E866 measurements unexpectedly show considerable x dependence in this ratio at x >0.2 ? • PAC approved experiment E906 will measure out to larger x • Partonic energy loss via Drell-Yan • Drell-Yan cross sections for nuclear targets dbar/ubar x

  11. Expected Precision E906 Experimental Setup • LANL proposes to build the Muon-Id based on proportional tubes experiment / NLO theory x1

Technology Transfer from HENP -> Medical Imaging and Homeland Security • Compton Enhanced Gamma Reconstruction Reconstruction of Compton Scattered Gammas • Collaboration with CIMA (Compton Imaging for Medical Applications) • PET prostate probe based on Silicon pad sensors • Very high resolution (sub-millimeter) small animal PET instrument based on Silicon sensors • Novel scheme for a true 3D parallax free PET scanner using the CERN Hybrid Photon Detectors • Exploratory research on a Compton Telescope/Camera using the techniques above for Homeland Security Applications • Collaboration with CIMA (Compton Imaging for Medical Applications) • PET prostate probe based on Silicon pad sensors • Very high resolution (sub-millimeter) small animal PET instrument based on Silicon sensors • Novel scheme for a true 3D parallax free PET scanner using the CERN Hybrid Photon Detectors • Exploratory research on a Compton Telescope/Camera using the techniques above for Homeland Security Applications photo electric effect

Existing Compton Camera Research (P-25 with NIS-6 and NIS-2) • Mission • Detect and track nuclear weapon or radiation dispersal device (RDD) • Development of next-generation instruments for nuclear astrophysics • Challenges • Weak sources, backgrounds, detection in real time Silicon Pixel Source:1 MeV @ 100m 1000s 105 photons/s
