  2. Skyscrapers The tallest skyscraper in the world measures 2,723 feet. It is called the Burj Khalifa located in the United Arab Emirates. If a bird flies to the top of the building and dives 836 feet. Then it rises 22 feet for 10 minutes. How high is the bird now?

  3. Airplanes A jet takes off from LNAS at 220 feet above sea level. The jet flies to 29,000 feet above sea level. How far above sea level did the jet fly?

  4. Underground Parking Garages Sue parked her car in an underground parking garage. She rode the elevator to level 5 and got out but she couldn’t find her car. She got back in the elevator and rode it to level 15. Then she got back on and rode it to level 3. How many levels did she travel?

  5. Undersea Adventures A shark descended to 170 ft below sea level. The fish that the shark likes to eat are swimming 20 feet below sea level. How far does the shark have to swim in order to catch the fish? A scuba diver descended to 14 feet below sea level. She then ascended 4 feet and swam 10 feet ahead. She then descended 6 feet. At what depth is she now?

  6. Elevators and Escalators Susie rode the escalator up 25 feet to the second floor. She then got on the elevator and rode it 75 more feet to the fourth floor. Then she walked down the stairs to the third floor. How far off the ground is Susie now?

  7. Nature The largest known iceburg in the North Atlantic measured 551ft. 90 % of an iceburg is below the surface of the water. How many feet above the water did the iceburg measure? How many feet below the water? The tallest mountain on Earth is not Mt. Everest. Mt. Everest measures 29,035 ft. The actual tallest mountain is Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea measured from top to its base below sea level it beats Everest by 4,436 feet. How tall is Mauna Kea?

  8. Famous Architecture The Great Wall of China was built in sections. One of the watchtowers, Wanjinglou, is 3,220 feet above sea level. Each year the height of the wall is reduced due to sandstorms as much as 16.4 feet per year. If that were to happen to Wanjinglou, how high would it be 5 years from now? 10 years from now?

  9. Sports During the football game the wide receiver caught three passes. One was for a touchdown and went 52 yards. The other was for a first down and went 17 yards. The other was a screen pass that did not go so well and he made -10 yards. What was the total yardage that he scored?

  10. Banking A bank statement as of June 30 shows a $1,549.00 balance. There are $738.00 in outstanding checks. There are also $2,097.00 in deposits that need to be posted. What would be the projected balance after the checks are debited and the deposits are entered?

  11. Temperature The temperature on March 1st was 20 degrees below zero. On March 2nd the temperature was 20 degrees. What was the difference in temperature between March 1st and 2nd?

  12. Task Work with a partner to create a poster showing a real life integer setting. Your poster must include: Drawings of the real life setting A number line with both positive and negative numbers. Integer story problems (two per student) that answer the questions: Where did you start? How far did you go? Where are you now? Be sure that you can solve the problems
