  3. World Youth Day: Three Phases • to June 2008: fundraising, logistical preparation, evangelization, catechesis & prayer • July 2008: pilgrimage of faith: an encounter with Christ, his Holy Spirit and his Church • August 2008 +: reaping the fruit in mission to the future

  4. Advertising and Fundraising • Advertise pilgrimage to parish and hold interest meeting • Begin fundraising immediately, split costs among those who participate in fundraising • Select one adult to act as the parish Stakeholder to communicate with Diocese

  5. Pilgrim Preparation • Everyone encouraged to register to receive monthly eDITIONS • offers long term personal preparation • develops WYD themes and contains: • - message from Bishop Co-ordinator • - catechesis on the theme • - prayer & inspired writings • - testimonies from young people • - life of a Saint • - a place of pilgrimage • free

Preparation Schedule • Look for final tour package in February 2007 (posters, registration forms, payment schedule, etc…) Get copy of promo DVD from WYD site. • Will need $200 deposit per person by June 2007 • Mandatory Stakeholder meeting in Fall 2007 • Mini Pilgrimage in Spring 2008 – final payment due. • Mandatory Stakeholder meeting in June 2008

Key Elements: Justice forums & service opportunities Through opportunities for service and forums for discussion and learning, World Youth Day will illuminate issues of justice, development, ecology, peace and social service that advance the dignity of every person and call young people to encounter Christ through serving others and building up God’s kingdom on earth

  24. Phase Three: Reaping the fruits • Opportunity for pilgrims to share with parish • Follow-up meetings and discussions – dinner with families? • Service projects • Opportunities for ePilgrims to gather with pilgrims

  25. Arlington Pilgrimage • Pilgrims must be 16 when stepping on plane. • Ratio of 1 adult to 7 teens (same gender) • We stay together as a group as much as possible. Stakeholders discuss group plans each night. • Create custom pilgrim manual with songs, prayers… • Bring musician, perhaps nurse • Common prayer as often as possible • Will have several priests for confessions, seminarians, etc… • Giveaways! (T-shirts, etc…) • Diocese does cover some costs. Least expensive trip available. (read fine print on other packages)

  26. Cost – Basic WYD package Depart on Sat. July 12, return late on Mon. July 21. (10 days, 7 nights) RT Airfare Dulles to Sydney (2007 prices) $1950 WYD fee (predicted) $350 Bus and Tour w/guide in Sydney $100 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total $2400 Does not include approximately 5 meals and spending money. If prices drop, we will pass on those savings to you.

(16 days, 13 nights) Airfare Dulles to Melbourne (2007 prices) $2000 WYD fee (predicted) $350 5 days southern Australia (budget accom.) $600 2 day drive Melbourne to Sydney $250 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total (based on 40 pilgrims) $3200 Does not include approximately 10 meals and spending money. If prices drop, we will pass on those savings to you.

  28. 2008 WYD Prayer God Our Father, we consecrate to you the World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008. Guide and protect Pope Benedict and all the leaders of the Church. Inspire and direct all those leading and planning the World Youth Day. Unite and protect them by your fatherly care.Amen Lord Jesus Christ, before you ascended to the Father, you promised to send your Holy Spirit so that we might be your witnesses to the end of the earth. Bless and multiply the efforts of all our staff and volunteers. Help us to take up our cross and follow you under the heavenly sign of the Southern Cross. Amen Holy Spirit, pour out your grace on this Great South Land of the Holy Spirit and grant to us a New Pentecost. Make of this land a true place of welcome for the young people of the world. Grant to those young people who come conversion of life, a deeper faith, and love for all. Enable them to build a new civilization of life, love and truth. Make them true witnesses to your power and grace. Amen Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Help of Christians - pray for us. Blessed Mary MacKillop - pray for us.
