The British gained control of India in the 18th and 19th centuries • Before British control India was loosely ruled by the Moghul Empire • The majority of the country was Hindu, but the Moghuls were Muslim • The Moghuls had very loose control over India, with large territories run almost entirely by their local princes • British control over India was begun by the British East India Company • The corporation gained control of all European trade with India • Over a period of 100 years (1757-1857) the East India Company conquered and ran large portions of India
