  3. Times have changed • 560 million people have used Skype – 124 million monthly log-ins (source: Microsoft) • 233 million ebay customers. Over 14 million active users in the UK (source: ebay) • Over 144 million active Amazon accounts (source: Amazon) • Over 425 million active gmail users in 2012 (source: Google) • 1,873,910,000,000 Google searches in 2012 (source: Google) • 1.19 billion monthly Facebook active users (source: Facebook)

  4. We create our own barriers How many of our customers genuinely don’t have the intellectual capacity to use technology?

  5. Between 2000 and 2006 my former company created volume online recruitment solutions for: • Boots • BT • Centrica • HMRC • Ladbrokes • McDonalds • National Car Parks • Next • Pret • RBS • Royal Mail • Superdrug • Thresher • World Duty Free

  6. We create our own barriers People will find a way to access the services that suit them

  7. So how to design online solutions that people use? • Clearly communicate ‘what’s in it for me’. Appeal to a person’s self-interest. This will: • Save me time and/or money • Interest me • Prevent me missing out • Get me something I want, etc. • Use behavioural economics / nudge theory. I don’t want to be the person that misses out • Empower whilst error-correcting • Encourage peer group support • Look at data and refine the solution • Recognise that people who create software and content tend to be smart technology enthusiasts. They are not our consumer.

  8. Are we part of the problem? • Welfare to work has always been advisor-centric. Do we bid for projects and deliver projects with this in mind? • Does taking what we do face to face and pushing this online create the best solution? • Our government funders can be risk averse and are terrified of data loss. Is this creating barriers rather than enabling?
