    1. Unit 2: Health, Safety & Injury In Sport The Types Of Injury And Illness Associated With Sports Performance

    2. Causes Of Injuries Injuries can occur as a result of an internal force within our body, or an external force from outside our body. An injury caused by an internal force may be a pulled muscle. This is also known as an intrinsic risk factor. An injury caused by an external force may be a a blow from a tackle. This is also known as an extrinsic risk factor.

    3. Many sporting injuries are minor cuts and bruises. However, some are more serious. These can be categorised as follows: (1) Impact or direct blow injuries. (2) Overuse injuries. (3) Accidental Injuries. (4) Injuries caused by environmental factors. (5) Chronic injuries.

    5. (1) Impact Or Direct Blow Injuries These injuries are common in many sports due to the nature of the sport. Eg: Rugby: direct tackle. Soccer: kick to the leg during tackle. Hockey: hit by stick or ball. Cricket: hit on hand by ball. Karate: direct blow from opponent.

    6. (2) Overuse Injuries These injuries usually occur as a result of excessive repetition of a movement or series of movements. Eg: Running: shin splints. Soccer: stress fracture of foot. Racket Sports: tennis elbow. Cricket: stress fracture of back. Karate: direct blow from opponent.

    8. (3) Accidental Injuries These injuries are common in most sports and can happen in any sporting context.

    10. (4) Injuries Caused By Environmental Factors These injuries are common in many sports due to the nature of the environment. Eg: Rugby: slipping on muddy field. Soccer: twisting ankle in divot on pitch. Hockey: slipping on astroturf. Cricket: grazing elbow on hard outfield.

    12. (5) Chronic Injuries If an injured sportsman returns to training before they are fully recovered from an injury then the injury can develop in to a chronic injury. Chronic injuries can take a long time, and be difficult, to heal properly.

    13. Types Of Injuries There are many different types of sporting injuries. Many of the most common are shown on the next slide.

    15. You must now fill in the empty spaces in the following table with specific examples of each type of injury. The first one has been done for you. Your examples must be different to those already shown!

    17. Types And Signs Of Illness Some illnesses are associated with, and can be brought on by, sporting activity. Eg: Asthma (wheezing and shortness of breath) Heart attack (chest pain and pain down left arm) Hypoglycaemia (increased blood sugar causing confusion)
