Life At Cummer…The 4 A’s • Athletics – Badminton, Volleyball, Basketball, Floor Hockey, Softball, Soccer, Track and Field, Cross Country • Arts – Drama, Visual Arts, Band, Choir, Talent Show • Academics– Peer Tutor Club, Speech Competitions, Math contests, Robotics • Attitude – Student Council, Me to We, The Eco Club, Future Aces, Boys to Men, Office Announcers

  12. What To Expect In Grade 6 • Lockers/locks • Agendas • Co-curricular activities/clubs/sports • 6 Day Cycle • No Recess Break • Increased Homework • Specialized Teachers • More Independence, Responsibility

  13. The School Day • 8:45 the school bell rings and you may go to your locker • First period begins at 9:00 • If you are late you will need a late slip • Nutrition break is from 10:42-10:54 • Dismissal is at 3:12 • Classes are 50 min. in length

  14. Lunch Hour/Cafeteria • There are 2 lunch periods: periods 4 and 5 • Students can buy food during morning Break or at Lunch • Variety of healthy choices • $5 lunch combos

  15. How Is Middle School Different? • Half of the day you are in CORE taking language arts, math, social studies, media and library (media and library are NOT every day) • The other half of the day you rotate through different classes on different days • These include: science and technology, French, drama and dance, visual arts, family studies and physical education

  16. French You will take French 5 times in a 6 day cycle At the end of the year all the grade 6s go to Le Papillon; a fancy French restaurant downtown

  18. Design and Technology • You will take Design and Technology as part of your science program • You will be designing, creating and building

  19. Visual Arts

  20. Drama and Dance • You will take drama and dance for 1/3 of the year • Students have a lot of fun learning new games, dances and performing!

  21. Family Studies ~ Cooking • Students enjoy cooking and eating! Yummy!

  22. Physical Education • You will take physical education all year – 3 times in a cycle of 6 days • You will need to purchase a uniform during the first week of school

  25. School Guidance Program Some Advice For Parents… • Stay involved…don’t hesitate to call your child’s teacher or counsellor • Talk…talk…talk…to your child!!! • We do give homework…and we do offer after school support 

School Guidance Program Some Advice For Parents… • Be careful of electronic devices Proper time management at home is very important…electronic addiction is on the rise. • Electronic Devices should remain in the locker, turned off unless permission from the teacher is given to use for assignments – this includes lunch time • Get informed (cyber safety) • Youtube, MSN, Facebook, Texting, Instagram • Gaming

  28. TRANSITION TASKS FOR PARENTS Adjustment to many teachers Adjustment to changes in child’s interests, responsibilities, privileges, independence Monitor child’s academic progress and supervise homework
