  8. North Korea Captures USS Pueblo On January 23,1968, North Korea captures American USS Pueblo. North Korea claim the USS Pueblo was intruding territorial waters and the ship and crew were held captive for 11 months. On December 23, 1968, after the USA signed an apology for espionage against the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, the crew members were released. The ship is currently in North Korea as a national museum.   9. Soviets Invade Czechoslovakia Soviet troops from Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and East Germany invade Czechoslovakia on the night of August 20 and 21st, 1968. They invaded to crush the “Prague Spring”. Prague Spring was a time of peace in Czechoslovakia when the government was not communist.   10. Space Race Soviets and American during the cold war also fought about outer space. On May 25,1961 President Kennedy announced the Space Race. This also began partly because the soviets had deployed the Sputnik in space on October 4,1957Soviets had the first man in space, Yuri Gagar.America was working on the Apollo project though and on December 21,1968 Apollo 11 allowed the first people to leave Earths orbit.   11. SALT 1 is Signed SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, these talks were between America and the Soviet Union. The Soviets and Americans negotiated limits and restraints about the missiles and weapons allowed to be used during the war. This led to many treaties and agreements.   12. Cease-Fire in Vietnam On January 23,1973, American President Nixon ordered a cease fire between America and Vietnam. All American Soldiers were to withdraw and all American Prisoners were to be released with in a 60 day time period. By April 30,1975, Vietnam was reunited as a whole country.   13. President Nixon Resigns On August 9,1974, American President Nixon resigns from office. He was said to have caused the Watergate Scandal which had began several years before his resignation. Watergate was illegal activities in the government, these were supposedly caused by Nixon's administrators.   14. Socialist Republic Of Vietnam After the end of the Vietnam war, North Vietnam and South Vietnam reunified. First they established contacts between the south and north populations, then on April 24, 1976, a new National Assembly was formed and voting for government began. On June 24, 1976, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was officially formed.   15. Yom Kippur War On October 6,1973, Egyptian and Syrian military forces attacked Israel on the holiest Jewish day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. Egypt and Syria were trying to get back territory lost in previous battles. On October 25,1973, a cease-fire was called.   16. Camp David Accords The Camp David Accords were Americas attempt at peace in the Middle East. Camp David accords is a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt to prevent further war.   18. Sino-US Relations After the falling between the Soviet Union and The Peoples Republic of China, America swooped in to create newer, better relations with China. From February 21-28,1972, President Nixon and several other Americans left for Beijing, China.   19. Black September in Jordan Black September is when Civil war broke out in September 1970 in Jordan. This was fought between the two Jordan populations: Palestinians represented by the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the native Jordanians represented by the Jordanian Armed Forces. Ostpolitik Neue ostpolitik which means new eastern policy, was what was happening when the Federal Republic of Germany(West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic of Germany(Eastern Germany) decide to cooperate.   21. SALT II Talks Begin On November 21, 1972, the second round of SALT talks began in Geneva. SALT II was going to be set to replace Interim Agreement with a long-term treaty.   22. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty The nuclear non-proliferation treaty was set to pledge cooperation in the spreading of nuclear technology. Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions The mutual and balanced force reductions were set to discuss the agreement on disbarment and control of forces in Federal Republic of Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Poland territory. America, England, Canada, and the USSR attended these talks.   24. SEATO Disbands SEATO, or the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, was in play for 22 years. It was a defense treaty for southeast Asia., formed in 1954.   25. Hot-Line Agreement On June 20, 1963 in Geneva, America and the Soviet Union made an agreement called the Hot-Line Agreement. It installed direct communications between Moscow and Washington for emergency use. It was signed to reduce nuclear war.
