  1. QuitPal Bill Killam, MA CHFP

  2. Project Design/Status • A full, user-centered design process was/is used for the project • Project ideation come from prior experience and a “light bulb” event • Initial concepts were “storyboarded” and tested in focus groups • Initial design mock up was developed as an interactive PPT • First round of prototype field testing was conducted with a small population of users • First production version is currently in a controlled filed trial

  3. Initial Product Ideation • Initially conceived to use social marketing as mean of assisting people in quiting smoking • Using community or group support/pressure • Allow quick access to a support group – even if they are unavailable • Extended to reporting on progress to a wider audience (social media sites)

  4. Functionality • Survey of existing apps and a literature scan showed other promising functionality • Hot lines and call centered have shown efficacy • Tracking and increased knowledge/awareness is known to have efficacy in other domains • Message is showing promise in initial smoking cessation research

  5. Project Status • QuitPal is currently available in the iTunes store and on SmokeFree.Gov • Its slated for a ½ year long, between subject, controlled study • QuitPal will be compared to “on your own” attempts to stop smoking • Participants will be common level, current smokers who have stated a near term desire to stop smoking • Drop out rate and cigarette usage will be measured • Remote data collection will be used to monitor app usage at the function level
