  1. EVERYTHING SUMMED UP IN CHRIST KINSMAN REDEEMER JoLynn Gower April 2019jgower@guardingthetruth.org JESUS FALL FEASTS SPRING FEASTS TABERNACLE

  2. VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY • Ephesians 1:9-12 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. • Summed up: anakephalaiomai: gathered in one place • Predestined: proorizo: to limit in advance • Purpose: prothesis: sacred showbread; setting forth of a design for living

  3. FEAST OF TRUMPETS • 7TH New Moon and Yom Teruah (The day of blowing) • Began the civil new year; the religious new year started on Nisan 1 in the spring • Numbers 29:1 Now in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall also have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work. It will be to you a day for blowing trumpets. • The Feast of Trumpets is a Sabbath • Trumpets were blown all over Jerusalem all day; only in the temple if the day was a Sabbath • Also called Rosh Hashannah (head of the year); ushered in ten days of penance and awe prior to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement

  4. AWAITING THE NEW MOON • The moon cycle is 29.5 days; no one knew if the new moon would be visible on the 29th or 30th day • Witnesses were sent out to watch for the new moon. Rabbis wrote that “no one knows the day or the hour” • Matthew 24:36-41  "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. As in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, one will be left.

  5. THE MYSTERY • Tekia: one long blast • Sevarim: three short blasts • Teruah: several short, staccatto like blasts • TekiaGedolah: the “great trumpet” or the “last trumpet” held as long as the sounder could • 1 Corinthians 15:50-52 I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at thelast trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. Revelation 10:7 …but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He preached to His servants the prophets.

  6. THE DAY OF ATONEMENT • Atonement: kaphar: to pacify, cover over; be merciful • Mercy Seat: kapporeth(H) or hilasterion(G); place of propitiation • Redeem: Padah: to transfer ownership through payment Koper (Kopher, Kaphar): substitutionary payment Ga’al: third party redeemer if you couldn’t redeem yourself • The Mercy Seat covered the Ark, which contained the Law; the Law said that people deserved judgment for sin; • Mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13) • The Day of Atonement reconciled Israel to Jehovah for another year ––but conditionally:

  7. DAY OF ATONEMENT • Hebrews 9:6-10  Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle performing the divine worship, but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.

  8. SAVED THROUGH THE LAW? • 1 Timothy 2:14-15  And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. • Sin due to deception: unintentional • Galatians 3:21-22  Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. • Galatians 2:21 "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

  9. FEAST OF TABERNACLES • Tishri 14 was the day of preparation; Tishri 15 began the feast day • The people began construction their “booth” the day after the Day of Atonement • Deuteronomy 31:9-11  So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. Then Moses commanded them, saying, "At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths, when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing.” • The Law was read on Day 1

  10. TABERNACLES, DAY 1 • The booth was detached and temporary • Constructed for the festival, not a permanent home • Interior could not be more than 20 cubits or lower than ten palms • Had to have three walls and thatched roof • The roof covered 50% of more of the structure; the part open to the sun was 50% or less • Not under a tree; not with fabric for cover • Simple furniture only • Worshipers carried the lulab with myrtle/palm/willow tied with its “own kind” in their right hand • Worshipers carried the “aetrog” in their left hand • The altar was decorated with willow and the trek for water to the pool of Siloam happened; the ceremony of pouring

  11. DAYS 2-6 • These days were half holy days or the lesser festival • John 7:10-14  But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.  So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, "Where is He?” There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.”  Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. • Priests marched around the altar once per day • People could purchase goods on the half day and prepare food

  12. DAY 7: THE GREAT DAY • John 7:37-38  Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" • Jesus probably said this during the water pouring • The seventh day (or 8th day) the dancing and celebration continued until daybreak • Four giant candelabra were in the court of the women; the wicks were the priests clothing from the prior year; priests’ sons scaled ladders to fill the bowls with oil; the light filled the city • John 8:12  Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
