  1. I PETER 3:8-12 8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

  3. INTRODUCTION This lesson listens in on Peter’s advice to the followers of Jesus Christ in three ways; first is directive to married people in verses one thru seven (v.1-7). Second are directives in general to Christians regarding how to treat each other in verse eight thru twelve (v. 8-12). Finally, the chapter concludes (v. 13-22) with directives to Christians regarding our motivation and or example for doing what we do and why we do as Saints. After all, Jesus Christ is our example and our salvation depends on our appropriate conduct as prescribed by God. It is verse eight thru twelve (v.8-12) that we focus on today for the beneficial encouragement of our family.

  4. I. Yes WE can be of “one mind” (“harmonious” N.A.S.B.) A. Our as noted Biblically; Romans 12:16; Romans 15:5-6; II Corinthians 13:11; Philippians 2:2-5 B. Our oneness should not be Diotrephes inspired / dominated III John 9-11 1. With Diotrephes, oneness cannot be achieved when we do as he did (v. 10) 2. We must be WE THINKERS!

  5. II. Yes WE can be “compassionate” (“sympathetic” N.A.S.B.) A. Compassion, one author says, is a disposition that causes us to literally throw ourselves into the concerns or needs of a brother enabling us to “weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15; I Corinthians 12:26) B. We should ever be mindful of God’s grace and how we benefit from the same (Psalm 86:15; Psalm 145:8). 1. Grace is God’s unmerited favor (we have done nothing to earn or deserve it) C. Since we benefit from His grace we should be willing to extend grace to others. 1. Remember the “unjust steward” Matthew 18:23-35 (forgiveness) 2. Don’t set a standard that you are not willing to be measured by (Matthew 7:1-5)

  6. III. Yes WE can “love” one another (I Peter 3:8 K.J.V. – love as brethren..) A. Peter continually urged love I Peter 1:22; I Peter 2:17; I Peter 3:8; I Peter 4:8 1. Contextually, says one author, the word “love,” describes the tender affection a child of God should possess and manifest toward a brother or sister in Christ see Romans 12:10; I Thessalonians 4:9; Hebrews 13:1). 2. Emphasize that the text encourages “one of another” (K.J.V.) or “with one another” (N.I.V.) a. Regarding our treatment of each other Romans 12:17-18, I Thess. 5:15 B. Be pitiful, be courteous… (Latter part of I Peter 3:8) 1. Pitiful - well compassioned, i.e. sympathetic :- pitiful, tender-hearted. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. 2. Thought: When we always see in others what we don’t see in each other, Ultimately others don’t want to see us! Believe it, operate accordingly & be blessed! a. Example – a wife / husband that notes the good qualities of other men / women and notes none about her own husband / spouse / friend / family, etc.

  7. IV. Yes WE can be “patient and forbearing”: (I Peter 3:9-12) A. Refuse to retaliate – I Peter 3:9; I Peter 2:21-24; Romans 12:14; Matthew 5:38-48; Luke 23:34 B. Refrain from verbal assassination – I Peter 3:10; Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 4:6 C. Pursue & Seek peace – I Peter 3:11; Psalm34:14; Romans 12:18; Romans 14:19;IITimothy 2:22; Hebrews 12:14; James 3:18

  8. CONCLUSION It is important that we are always mindful of these precepts in that they are prescribed by God thru His word (The Bible). It is more than just good reading, more than just another book, more than decent life principles; it contains the commands of God. God said we should be: of one mind, compassionate, loving, patient and forbearing. And YES WE CAN! www.RandyColeSimsSr.com
