  2. Universal Support for the Classroom What can you do to get the biggest bang for your buck and decrease the most minor infractions that occur in the classroom?

  3. Greeting • Nine Minutes That Have the Greatest Impact • First three minutes of a child’s day • First three minutes when they get home from school • Last three minutes before they go to sleep

  4. Conveyance • First three minutes of class time and last three minutes of class time • Entrance • Exit In a study by Allday and Pakurar (2007) measured teacher greetings on middle school students and found an increase in on-task behavior from 45% to 72% when teachers greeted students at the door at the beginning of the hour.

  10. Smile Every time you smile it is the equivalent of 1 bar of high quality chocolate. When you smile at someone, it engages mirror neurons- much like when someone yawns. It is almost impossible to not smile back when someone smiles at you. Researchers found the size of your smile not only dictates how successful you will be, it predicts how long you will live.

  11. Greeting Students Touch Them Use their name in a positive way Make eye contact Smile T U M S

  13. Cut two slits in lid of shoebox. Cut four holes in side of shoe box. Slide pencil into first hole and thread adding machine tape on it on the right side of the box. Push pencil the rest of the way through. Push pencil on right side of the box holes all the way through. Pull adding machine tape up through left slit and over an down through right slit. Tape adding machine tape onto right side pencil. Close box lid and duct tape the lid to the box. Tighten up the tape. Each day, have the students write what they learned and then scroll the tape forward on the right. At the end of the year, they will have a diorama journal of their entire year of learning.

  14. Targeted Group Strategy for the Classroom • Minor disruptions- What works once the kids are in the classroom?

  15. Group Contingencies = Group Reinforcements Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together.Paul Ryan

  23. Make your own scratch-off prizes Two parts model paint to one part dishwashing detergent. Here’s my suggestion- On tag board make your bubble letters and then write a prize in each bubble letter. Laminate the tag board. Then paint over the laminated letters. This way you can reuse it year after year. Otherwise, the student will scratch too hard and you won’t be able to use it again.

  24. Label Noodles “A” and “B” – put prizes on board for “A” and “B” and then choose two students to start marbles on command. Class gets prize of whichever marble makes it first.

  25. Write prizes on a CD- choose student to spin. • Spin the wheel

  26. Patience is not a virtue. • It is a choice! (Riffel, 1978-2014) • I aspire to be more patient with the students today.
