Owen • -Knoxville, Tennessee Native • -2nd full year teaching high school English • -Former White House Communications Office Intern • -Studied abroad in Stratford-Upon-Avon and London, England writing reviews for both Shakespearean dramas and modern plays • -Enjoys Attending SEC Athletic Events (Go Vols!), Reading, Watching Movies, Hiking, Doing Zumba, Traveling, and Drinking Starbucks Coffee

  4. Mrs. Owen’s Pet Peeves • 1.) Messiness- Please keep our classroom neat and clean. • 2.) Laziness- I am not a lazy teacher; don’t be a lazy student. • 3.) Cell Phones- Be presently engaged in the class. • 4.) Respect- Be respectful to everyone; everyone deserves it! • 5.) Tardiness- Don’t be late. You will have to receive a tardy slip if you are not on the steps of my trailer when the tardy bell rings.

  5. How will Mrs. Owen treat me? • Fairly • Like an adult- unless your behavior is childlike • With respect- unless your behavior is disrespectful

  6. What should I expect from this class? • Vast amount of class work • You will have to study for tests and quizzes. • You will have to read. • You will have to write and rewrite. • I try to make this class as painless as possible even if you hate English.

  7. Mrs. Owen’s Top Ten • 1.) One rule: Respect yourself and respect others. • 2.) This course is a survey of world literature. • 3.) It is my goal to engage you in learning through a variety of strategies. • 4.) This course includes close reading and a significant amount of writing. • 5.) Sophomores will be taking their Gateway tests in the spring semester, and I will be preparing you for your writing responses.

  8. Mrs. Owen’s Top Ten • 6.) I will use technology on a daily basis including my teaching website (Schoology), Remind, and Twitter (follow Mrs. Owen for class updates @pemberley87). • 7.) A majority of essays will be written in-class to help students in brainstorming, writing, and editing for a timed writing assessment. • 8.) Students must be present to succeed. • 9.) I will be available Tuesday mornings (6:45-7:15 a.m.), Thursday afternoons (2:30-3:30) for help sessions/make-up work. If you need assistance outside of these times, please meet with me to schedule an appointment individually. • 10.) I enjoy my job, and I consider it a privilege.
