  12. Usages • 1. Polite requests • The conditional of verbs such as vouloir, pouvoir, devoir is used instead of the present to express a wish or request in a more polite manner. • Compare: • Je veux partir. Je voudrais partir. • I want to leave. I would like to leave. • Peux-tu m’aider? Pourrais-tu m’aider? • Can you help me? Could you help me? • Il doit t’écrire. Il devrait t’écrire. • He must write to you. He should write to you. :)

  13. Pratiquons! • Montrez que vous êtes poli(e). Pour cela, reformulez les phrases suivantes en utilisant le conditionnel. • 1. Tu dois partir. • Tu devrais partir. • 2. Nous voulons t’accompagner. • Nous voudrions t’accompagner. • 3. Pouvez-vous m’aider? • Pourriez-vous m’aider? • 4. Vous devez être plus généreux. • Vous devriez être plus généreux. :)

Indirect Speech • The conditional is used to report what people mentioned in the past about a future event. • It describes what they said they would do or what would happen later. • Compare: • Marc dit (présent) qu’il ira (futur) au musée. • Marc says that he will go to the museum. • Marc a dit (past) qu’il irait (conditionnel) au musée. • Marc said that he would go to the museum. :)

  16. Le prof dit qu’il sera absent demain. • Qu’est-ce que la météo a annoncé hier? • Elle a annoncé qu’il ferait beau ce weekend. • Qu’est-ce qu’il t’a dit? • Il m’a dit qu’il prendrait le train. :)

  17. 3. Après au cas où (in the event that) • Elle nous donnera son adresse au cas où nous irions à Paris. • Au cas où tu trouverais mon sac, donne-le à mon frère. :)

  18. 4. The present and past conditional are used in journalistic style to give an unconfirmed report. • The present conditional refers to an unconfirmed present or future event. • M. Lebrun vendrait tous ses yachts. • It is reported that Mr. Lebrun is selling (will sell) all of his yachts. • M. Lebrun aurait vendu tous ses yachts. • It is reported that Mr. Lebrun has sold all of his yachts. :)

  19. 5. The conditional is often introduced by expressions such as moi, nous, à ta(votre) place. (If I were you) • À ta place, je choisirais la Renault. • Nous, nous n’y serions pas allés. • We wouldn’t have gone there. :)

  20. 6. The conditional and past conditional of the verb dire are also used as equivalents of the verb ressembler à. • Quel mauvais temps! On dirait l’hiver. • What awful weather! You’d think it was (= it looks like ) winter. :)
