  1. Influence of EntertainmentEarly 20th Century-Present Professor Quinn Kaeley Boyle April 18, 2011 Power point Presentation

  2. “Every country gets the circus it deserves. Spain gets bullfights. Italy gets the Catholic Church. America gets Hollywood.” -Erica Jong (Finest Quotes)

  3. Entertainment has changed dramatically over the years.

  4. 21st Century American Family Old-fashioned American Family Could explain reasoning behind ourselves and how we have evolved as not only a nation, but as a colony of human beings.

  5. Intended Audience? Public!

  6. KDKA Jack Armstrong Freddy Allen Jack Benny “The Lone Ranger” Radio brought family together!

  7. Radio become most popular with the induction of one of the most historic broadcasts ever recorded, the KDKA. Orson Welles made up his own broadcast based off of H.G. Wells’ story, War of the Worlds. KDKA was one of the first ever radio station programs that allowed for entertainment to cross many homes in many states around the nation. Freddy Allen and Jack Benny are just mere examples of the type of music played many years ago. The radio was an important part of history because it was a way to receive all kinds of information from news, sports, fictional stories, hear music, weather updates, etc.

  8. The government would take hand in making sure that what was heard on the radio was family oriented which brought about the Radio Act of 1927. Radio Act of 1927: Kept watch over the radio stations to prevent any kind of unnecessary information from getting out. *Television quickly suited up as one of the most popular ways of entertainment seen by our very eyes.*

  9. You Are There Dwight Howard’s I Like Ike Richard Nixon’s famous Checker’s Speech The Honeymooners Father Knows Best I Love Lucy

  10. You Are There brought important historical events into families’ homes. Sitcoms such as The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Father Knows Best and many others brought love, laughter, and life lessons into the homes of many. Movies, songs, children shows, and the usual news and sitcoms were also featured later on. During the Vietnam War, families were able to sit in front of the television and watch what was going on as it was actually happening. Television began to become more advanced with how things were portrayed.

  11. Internet

  12. At first, the internet was used by the US Government as a weapon during the Cold War. Scientists and researchers used it wisely as a source for communication and to share any discovering data with each other. This was their way of keeping track of any kind of threats or messages that the Soviets were possibly sending to destroy our military and our country. Main source of information for all of society, not just the higher ups. We can listen to any kinds of music, email anyone to check up on things, complete homework assignments, etc. Has become a steady source for finding information about our neighborhood, state, country, and even the world around us. Tells us anything and everything we want, within reason. Internet has quickly become one of the best and easiest ways to stay in contact with others.

  13. Radio

  14. Some music has come to be very sexual and violent, a change from back in the day. Internet has become more absurd than any of the listed problems below. Talking to each other and people who call in, but it always talks about the least important things in the world rather than the important situations that are occurring right in front of our eyes. Little kids can type in anything they want, and they will get it. Internet has gone from communicating with one another to showing graphic pictures, sexual videos, sexual porn sites; the list goes on. Television reveals shows made of violence, sex, and everything in between. Instead of focusing on real news such as wars, the media has transformed into celebrity news frenzy; celebrities don’t go to war and risk their lives for their country. The media has become more violent, more sexual, more graphic, and less reliable.

  15. 21st Century

  16. People have become more anesthetized by television and video games. Portray more violence and sexual content rather than a more family oriented and safe revealing. Little kids have brought guns to school thinking it was okay because they didn’t know the difference between what is right and wrong. When children grow, they grow up as how they see things on television and by what they register from their family. Some kids become aggressive or forget about the world and become very independent.

  17. Teenagers base their rights, fashion, and their common sense based on what celebrities do in which how the media portrays them. Influence of certain celebrities could lead to smoking, drugs, and even alcohol. Teenagers tend to listen more to the media rather than the parents which makes it harder for the parent to set certain standards for their children. Society does not focus solely on what celebrities do because we are too focused on working, keeping our jobs, going to school, and doing what the normal American family did once before.

  18. My grandmother believes…

  19. My grandmother blames technology for why people these days do not get out and play, rather they sit inside all day playing malicious video games, watching unnecessary shows on television and listening to non-influential music. In my grandmother’s early teenager life, parents had control of the television so she hardly ever had the privilege to watch her favorite shows. Every new song, movie, or show that comes out now depicts some kind of unnecessary view of sexual conent, death, and violence that is not meant for young children’s eyes. Shows my grandmother watched many years ago did not depict violence, death, sexual content, or anything that a child’s eyes were not meant to see.

  20. War video games like COD and War Games – from what my grandmother knows of – she feels that this will give children the meaning of violence and malicious behavior for when they grow older. Video games can become an addiction and can draw the most important things in life like education away from the children’s real needs in life.

  21. There is an unbelievable amount of sexual websites and even advertisements traveling throughout the web that sometimes not even parents can control. Girls are getting pregnant and having babies before they are adults. Young boys are bringing in dangerous weapons to school because they feel it’s not a bad thing to do. Fights are occurring at schools and being put on the internet and no one is doing anything to stop it.

  22. What this all boils down to is…

  23. Technology has become more powerful over the decades. Entertainment has become more sexually exclusive, violently repulsive, and dangerously deceiving. Technology is a better way of communicating with others around the world, however, since its emergence, entertainment has been nothing more than a mere image of what technology reveals on a day to day basis.
