Facts according to Child Trends DataBank: www.childtrendsdatabank.org • In the United States in the 1950’s, there were 47.3 million children under the age of 18 • In 2004, there was 73.3 million children under the age of 18 • In 2020, it is expected that the population of children under 18, will grow to 80.3 million

New York States’ Need for Quality Providers According to “Investing in New York: Economic Analysis of Child Care and Education” • In New York State - 620,000 children spent most of their days with child care providers in 2004 • In 22,000 businesses caring for children • Employing 120,000 employees

  4. Childcare Providers ultimately assist New York families! • Helping more than 750,000 parents stay in the workforce. • Providing care starting at 6 weeks of age and continuing into grade school.

Begins here: At Home Care or Child Care in all types of establishments: Provides services for children ages 6 weeks to 5½ years Ends here: School-aged children entering Elementary school: Provides care in Universal Pre-K’s Provides care in Elementary school settings up to Kindergarten Care for Early Childhood Children

High School Courses required for Early Childhood Majors Students who entered ninth grade in 2001: • Pass at least five Regents examinations with 22 units of credit: 4 in English 4 in Social Studies 3 in Mathematics 3 in Science 1 in the Arts .5 in Health 2 in Physical Education 1 in a Language other than English, 4 credits by attending a Career and Technical (BOCES) class.
