  1. Agenda • Do now • Climate change and sea levels discussion • Sea level activity Lesson Objectives • SWBAT describe causes of rising sea levels. • SWBAT describe storm surges and what causes them. • SWBAT describe how climate change could affect the local community. Do Now • What is climate change? • List three impacts of climate change.

  2. A Few Effects of Climate Change • Drought • Habitat loss and extinction • Ocean acidification • Increased intensity and frequency of severe weather • Rising sea levels

  3. Ocean temperatures are rising.

  4. Rising Sea Levels • Estimated rise of 2.5 to 6.5 feet by 2100 • Making predictions is complicated • Weather patterns can greatly affect sea level • Effect of polar ice sheets is difficult to determine

  5. What causes the sea level to rise? • Melting terrestrial glaciers • Melting polar ice • Thermal expansion of ocean water

  6. Storm Surges • Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide.

  7. What causes storm surges? • Storm surges are primarily caused by strong winds associated with the storm.

  8. Most damage is caused by storm surge

  9. Hurricane Sandy • Storm surges of over 10 feet • Waves over 30 feet • Over 100 lives lost • Billions of dollars in damage

  10. Topographic maps show elevations as contour lines.

  11. Each contour line is 10 feet.

  12. Color in the areas that would be underwater if the sea level rose 10 feet. • Using a different color, color in the areas that would be underwater if the sea level rose 20 feet. • Using another color, color in the areas that would be underwater if the sea level rose 30 feet.

  13. Discussion • What are the major causes of sea level rise? • What would a 5 foot sea level rise mean for East Boston? What about 10 feet? • What causes storm surges? • How would East Boston be affected by an increase in storm frequency and intensity? • What do you think East Boston should do to prepare for climate change?
