  1. MS - Project “Identification and implementation of adaptation response measures in Drini-Mati River Delta (DRMD)” National Conference , Tirana , 3 - 4 November 2011 Proposed ICZM tools and methods for the DMRD area Martin Le Tissier and Andrian Vaso

  2. Content • The challenges for coastal management in the DMRD area. • Why is Integrated Coastal Zone Management relevant for climate change adaptation. • Approaches for ICZM. • Tools for ICZM.

  3. The challenge Climate change impacts will primarily lead to a threat from changing shoreline and flooding.

  4. The role of the environment • A ‘healthy’ and ‘functioning’ environment can provide space and time for human systems to adapt to the changes that climate change will impose. Protecting wetland migration will aid in sea level rise adaptation and provide mitigation to greenhouse gases

  5. Why is managing difficult?

  6. ICZM as a tool for adaptation A coastal adaptation roadmap applies a climate lens to the ICM policy cycle often used by coastal practitioners

  7. Principles of ICZM Take a broad perspective Take a long term perspective Work with natural processes Local specificity Participatory approach Adaptive management Combination of instruments Involvement of all stakeholders

  8. Benefits of ICZM Principles of ICZM help to lead to co-ordination and co-operation so that activities reinforce each other and contribute to a more integrated strategy

  9. Outcomes of ICZM ICZM will assist in mainstreaming climate change adaptation into planning and decision-making processes – in this example for the tourism sector.

  10. Example of adaptation
