The Issue • Despite advancements in equality, women are still faced with: • Significant pay gap • Under-representation in leadership positions • Primary responsibility for childrearing • Primary responsibility for aging parents • Predominantly male supervisors • Leadership development that does not recognize the complex lives most women live

  3. The Distinct Problem • As women seize the opportunity to increase their representation in academic leadership positions, what factors enable them to successfully navigate the various responsibilities in their lives? What impact does their position have on their other areas of responsibility?

  4. The Evidence • Community Colleges are expecting large numbers of retirement in coming years 1 • Women in the workforce now outnumber men in terms of: • Education 2 • Employment 3 • Leadership Aspirations 2 • These trends set the stage for tremendous opportunities for women in academic leadership positions

  5. The Purpose • The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of how women’s interpersonal characteristics may be shaped by academic leadership experiences. • Questions • What experiences or interpersonal qualities lead women to pursue academic leadership? • How do leadership experiences impact the interpersonal qualities of women? • What changes in interpersonal qualities does a women experience as she advances through her career? • What impact do the roles that a woman carries outside of work have on this ‘personal evolution?’

  6. Targeted Audience • This research has the potential to benefit: • Women as they consider, continue or reflect on academic leadership experiences • Community College administrators as they develop strategies for succession planning • Researchers and practitioners involved in the analysis and delivery of leadership development models
