### Shoe Classification Lab

Objective

Students will develop a hierarchical system to classify shoes.

Students will be able to explain the importance of the Linnaean classification systems for scientists.

Purpose
• How can we develop a system for classifying shoes?
Procedures
• Remove right shoe
• Place on table
• Find 3 characteristics that all the shoes have
• Divide this group into 2 subgroups
• Divide until you only have ONE shoe per subgroup
Procedures
• Pass these shoes to the next group
• Classify them using your system
Data Analysis
• What were some common characteristics for classifying your shoes (ALIENS – honors) ?
• Did you have trouble classifying them? Explain.
• Was it difficult to use your system for the new shoes (ALIENS – honors)? Explain.
• Is there only one way to classify your shoes (ALIENS – honors) ? Explain.
• How can you make you system better?
Conclusion
• Why do we classify things?
• Why do scientists classify things?
• How was your classification system similar to how scientists classify living organisms? How is it different?
