  2. Like literature, Film can: • Be analyzed on the basis of plot, setting, character, and theme. • Be classified into specific genres. • Have many valid interpretations. • Be used in a variety of ways.

  3. Types of assignments • Not only can mode-based essays be used when analyzing film, but types of writing specific to film analysis may be utilized also. • These may include film reviews and character sketches. • Writers may also examine specific themes explored within a film.

  4. “Videodrome” • “The television screen is the retina of the mind’s eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears in the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television.”

  5. The assignment • An argumentative essay using themes from the film: reality/non-reality, redeeming value of television vs. destructive value of television, violence and desensitization, Cronenberg’s obsession with the human body, success of the film, the fascination of people with the media, etc., etc.
